Only families who have had babies during the Covid-19 pandemic know what it feels like to be extremely happy and blessed, but at the same time feel so lonely and sad.

Couples who have had babies over these past couple of years know exactly what it means to be overjoyed because you are experiencing the greatest blessing of all, that of bringing a new life into the world, but also feel like there’s no one there to share your happiness with.

Indeed, the pandemic has taught us a lesson or two over these years, with the most important of all being that we really need each other. We need the support our family and friends can give us, we need someone’s kind words, thoughtful gesture, or warm hug.

And this story is just coming to remind us that the social distancing we have been practicing over the last couple of years has not taken a toll on our empathy as humans.

Jessica Kitchel and her husband recently became parents for the second time. They already have an older daughter, and right before the holidays, their son, Chancy, was born.

Jessica gave birth to Chancy through a c-section, so the days after his birth the new mom was going through some physical pain besides the normal ups and downs that the post-partum period brings along anyway.

Especially when her husband had to return to work and she stayed home with their newborn son, Jessica started feeling a bit overwhelmed by what was happening. She was thinking of the restrictions they had during the Covid situation, while she also had the Christmas blues which certainly didn’t help her feel better.

But a kind gesture from a stranger changed everything.

Over the holidays, a UPS driver delivered a box to Kitchel’s door. When he saw the stork balloons and the blue ribbons around the house, he knew that there had been an addition to the family living there.

So, he decided to leave a message. He turned to the doorbell camera and sent his wishes.

“If this is the, ‘It’s a Boy House,’ I hope all is going well with your newborn. I had a child around the same time you guys did. I hope everything is going good. God bless.”

The man, identified as Dallen Harrell, was a temporary UPS driver, and a new dad. Sadly, he and his wife hadn’t had the chance to have a baby shower before their son was born, but he did his best to provide for his family and he took it day by day.

However, his whole life changed after that message. Kitchel was so moved by his kindness that she posted about it on social media and it went viral.

People loved Harrell’s generosity, and they wanted to return the good he did for a new mom. So, they started sending packages full of stuff for the baby. They even bought the entire baby registry, which Harrell didn’t know how to thank everyone for.

Jessica and her family also put together a thank you gift for the dad, and according to The Denver Channel, UPS offered him a full-time position as well.

A few weeks ago, Jessica and Dallen met in person, and the two families are now friends.

The mom told NBC News:

“Dallen’s message reminded me that kindness is free. It makes me emotional, just having a son myself, knowing how I want to raise him. Dallen’s mom did an incredible job.”
