Since the pandemic forced salons all over the world to close their doors, people were left with two choices: either attempt a haircut of their own, or let it all grow out.

It has to be said that on this occasion, women have it a lot easier than men.

As men’s hair is generally shorter, it requires cutting once every three weeks or so. But for women whose hair tends to be longer, going a whole lockdown without getting it cut is more of an interesting experiment than a drastic change to their appearance.

When lockdown hit in New York, mom Amy Prole decided that she and her daughters would take the approach of growing out their hair.

One year on, Amy and her daughters 7-year-old Olivia and 12-year-old Madison were sporting beautifully long hair.

The three girls could give Rapunzel a run for her money with their wavy long locks- but it turns out that having long hair isn’t the easiest to manage!

“It’s getting hard to handle,” Madison told the cameras.

The family paid a visit to Cactus Salon, in Long Island New York, who were going to be responsible for their first haircut in over a year.

The girls’ haircut was going to be special in more than one way.

The family had selflessly decided to donate the ends of their hair to non-profit company Hair We Share, who gives wigs to people who have lost their hair due to medical reasons.

During lockdown, these companies were significantly affected by the closure of hair salons- but luckily, things are looking up.

“Now that people are able to go back to salons, our mail is full of hair donations every day,” Suzanne Chimera, co-founder of Hair We Share said.

First, Madison and Olivia were taken to a different section from their mom, so that the end result would remain a surprise until the big reveal.

Then, it was time for the measuring! Hairdressers found that both Amy and Olivia had 10 inches of hair to give, while Madison had a whopping 14 inches.

All of these lengths would be perfect for making a wig.

Once the hair was cut, the girls put their donations in plastic bags, before getting their new hair styled, blow-dried, and sprayed.

Olivia had gone for a shoulder length ‘do, while both Madison and her mom had opted for a shorter bob. They all look incredible!

The two sisters headed out to the parking lot where their mom was waiting for them behind a screen.

Finally, the moment of the big reveal was here, and as they clocked each other’s new haircuts for the first time, all three girls couldn’t wipe the huge smile from each of their faces!

“We look like twins!” Amy said delightedly to Madison.

The donated hair will now be made into wigs and passed on to someone who needs it the most. What an incredible transformation for such a worthy cause!
