In terms of musical instruments, there is just some oomph and power that is absolutely unmatched when you’re playing the drums. However, it turns out that you don’t necessarily need an instrument to do some percussion. In fact, body percussion has been around for ages and basically allows your body to be the instrument itself.
It’s a very no-nonsense and simple approach to making music, and it’s one that is popular around the world.
The Samoan “Fa’ataupati” is a perfect example of a popular body percussion tradition, and this actually involves a whole lot of dancing as well. Or just think about “Epo I Tai Tai E”, the traditional folk song from the Maori people of New Zealand, perhaps the most well-known example.
Body percussion is all about making sounds by stomping your legs, slapping your hands, hitting your torso, and tapping your feet.
You could even say that modern tap dance is a derivative of body percussion, as there are a whole lot of similarities between them.
The Costa Rican musical group Tarambé is a huge fan of body percussion and decided to embrace it completely in their performances.
These guys certainly know how to make some music, and their feeling for rhythm and the beat of their own bodies is unmatched. And it’s definitely not simple too – they use pretty much all body parts and it all comes together with perfect synchronicity and rhythm. Just like with most other body percussion groups, dancing is another important part. Visuals are important, and they really add a lot to the music.
Something that definitely stands out is the chemistry that these six men have. They must’ve gone through hours of practice together, but it really shows as their timing is impeccable.
Perfect timing is important: because if there’s just one wrong beat, the whole song is ruined and it can’t be unheard.
However, that certainly isn’t the case here. Every single step, slap or tap is executed with ease and without a single missed beat. It truly makes this performance one you’ll want to rewatch over and over again. All of these talented members are perfectly in sync with each other and let their bodies do the talking.
They even experimented a bit and wandered off from classical body percussion techniques.
For example, instead of clapping their hands together, they’ll also slap their arms instead just to create a different sound. They twist and turn their body parts just to achieve a higher variety of sounds. Combine that unique twists with a rapid tempo and you’ve got a performance that’s truly awe-inspiring.
Another thing that is really evident, is that these six dancers and musicians really know how to use the most of their stage and captivate the audience. That way, their performance doesn’t get boring for a single second! It’s a spectacle you just want to keep watching and pay attention to.
A video of one of their latest performances was uploaded to YouTube, and the internet absolutely loved it!
At the moment, the video has amassed almost half a million views. It’s especially popular in their home country of Costa Rica but has gotten some international attention as well.
