When we think of first-aid, paramedics come to mind.

But a couple from Michigan got a first responder from the unlikeliest places and were overly thankful that he was there at the right time.

Susan Causey was having a rather normal day when she picked her husband up from a senior center in Southgate. Everything seemed normal at first but symptoms showed up quickly before they had time to react.

“I could tell just by the way he was walking to the car that something was wrong. So, when he got in the car, he couldn’t even talk,” she told WXYZ-TV Detroit.

The symptoms seem invisible but if you’re living with someone who has diabetes, you know that it’s something you can’t ignore.

Causey’s husband was crashing.

His sugar was dropping and if immediate action was not taken, the situation could get a lot worse.

“When you’re a diabetic, you can drop so fast. You can go from shock to coma, and I knew he was at a very close point of coma,” Causey said to the news outlet.

They looked around to see if there were any nearby hospitals or clinics. When these options were not available, Causey had to be creative.

She drove to the nearest McDonald’s.

The indoor section was closed so Causey had no choice but to line her car up in the drive-through lane.

As soon as she got to the speakers, she yelled out, “I need a large orange juice. Can you please have someone run it out to me? My husband is in diabetic shock.”

With an urgent and unusual request on their deck, the staff and workers turned to their manager James Dalpiaz for help.

“I ran. And I said, ‘I got it. I got it. I got it. I know what to do.’ So, I’m pouring sugar in there. And they said, ‘Oh, she only asked for orange juice.’ And I said, ‘I know what I’m doing, just trust me,'” said Dalpiaz to the news outlet as he recounted his perspective of the story.

Somehow, even if Causey didn’t give specific instructions, the manager knew exactly what to do.

“I didn’t even think to tell him to put sugar in it. You know, when stuff like this happens, I don’t care how many times it happens, I always get shook up,” said Causey to the news outlet. “You’ve got to react pretty quick to it. And he did. So, he’s my little hero forever.”

It turns out, Dalpiaz’s aunt is also diabetic and as such, he’s not a stranger to these kinds of situations.

Causey also shared that her husband has other health issues which can complicate attacks like these.

She said that Dalpiaz stopped the day from turning into a disaster.

She took to Facebook and posted a shoutout for him on a community page. People were supportive of Dalpiaz and were delighted to know that people like him are out there.

As for Dalpiaz, an admitted “shy guy”, said that he did only what he thought was right.

Their first responder was a fast-food manager, and their life-saving medicine was a sugar-loaded orange juice. And those things were more than enough for Causey to believe that there was a guardian angel over their shoulders that day.
