The Chombueng Marathon is an annual event that attracts many competitive athletes. Competitors apply for the event in September, having roughly four months to prepare. To be honest, the Chombueng Marathon is more or less like any other running event— but this year, an adorable moment took the world by storm.
Shop owner Khemjira Klongsanun, 43, had registered for the event and was excited to compete against the other runners.
When the race began, she steadily pounded the pavement for the first seven miles before something caught her eye.
Ahead, she could see runners dodging something on the road. When she got closer, she realized it was an adorable, little puppy.
“It seemed to me this little guy was lost,” said Klongsanun.
“There were no houses, no other dogs, or no people around.”
Although she could have simply left the puppy and carried on with her route, Klongsanun did something special instead.
She scooped up the Thailand wolfdog puppy and carried him the remaining 19 miles of the race.
“Running almost 20 miles carrying the dog was truly a challenge. It was two times more tiring than a normal marathon, but I did it anyway just because he is adorable.”
After the marathon, she posted an adorable photo that featured the tired pup curled up on her race number and medal.
Klongsanun appealed for the pup’s owner to come forward and reclaim the puppy.
When nobody stepped forward, she adopted the dog— and named him Chombueng in honor of the race.
“It took a lot of time to take the new dog for checkups, vaccinations, and treatments,” she said. “But I’m glad to save him and willing to have him with other dog members in the family.”
“It might take a while for him to adapt himself, but Chombueng is a very smart boy. I’m sure he is going to be happy living with us.”
When people caught wind of Klongsanun’s kind deed, the story immediately went viral. It’s been covered by media outlets including MSN, Vice Sports, The Dodo, New York Post, and more. A few comments on the story read:
“I want to give her a gold medal.”
“They are both adorable. Very lucky run for both Khemjira and the puppy. Best mates!”
“They look so cute together.”
“So sweet. I wish more people in the world had the compassion of this one.”
