A few days ago, Brendon Birt was driving down a road in Red Oak, Iowa. At some point, he made a wrong turn and, while he was thinking about how he could return in the right direction, he realized a house was on fire.

Indeed, it seems that this wrong turn was meant to happen in order to save four siblings that were at the time sleeping inside the burning home.

Birt saw that one of the houses in the neighborhood had caught on fire, and something inside him was telling him there were people in there who needed help.

“I just felt like somebody was in there,” Birt told ABC affiliate KETV. “I just knew I had to act quick.”

So, he pulled over and rushed to the house, where he started banging on the windows to check if there was someone inside.

“Every second that was going by it was getting worse,” the man told ABC7.

Only moments later, the four siblings, who until then had been sleeping, woke up from the pounding on the windows and the man’s screaming.

As they opened their eyes they realized something was very wrong.

“Everything was just black in the living room,” the youngest borther recalled. “There was nothing left of it.”

The siblings, aged 22, 17, 14, and 8, tried to find a way to escape the burning home.

Indeed, the youngest siblings got out the front door first, and were followed by their big brother what seemed to be ages later.

“I walked up into an oven of heat and flames,” the 22-year-old narrated.

The stranger who had just saved the siblings’ lives couldn’t believe that he had just accidentally arrived on time to save them.

Since the fire alarm didn’t go off, the four of them would not have been alerted of what was going on otherwise, and they might not have made it.

“They came out the door [and] I just felt like I just wanted to break down and cry,” Birt told KETV.

And, while the four humans who were inside the house all made it safely out of there, only two out of the seven dogs owned by the family survived.

The mother, Tender Lehman, told a local news outlet that she was out of town in Montana at the time of the incident because of a family emergency.

She was so grateful to Birt for saving her kids. She also stated that they now consider him a family member.

“My kids wouldn’t have made it,” she said. “They’re safe because of him.”

Tender’s mother has started a GoFundMe page in order to raise some money for her daughter’s family in order for them to be able to be back on their feet soon.

To date, more than $20k has been raised out of the $30k goal. The family still stays in a camper but hopes to rent a home soon.
