When a lot of people envision marriage they want it to be with someone they can “grow old with.” Laura and Howard Serena had achieved that type of beautiful relationship.

The couple lived in marital bliss for 73 long years and grew a big family together. But sadly though, they reached a point where Laura’s final days were ahead – so she was admitted into hospice.

One day, 92-year-old Howard went to visit his wife while she lay in her hospital bed. It was during that visit that he decided to serenade Laura with their “love song.”

Fortunately, Erin and other family members were there to witness and record the priceless scene.

On YouTube, she wrote:

“Moments before this video began, when Grandma heard that Grandpa was in the room, she asked if she could hold him. Grandpa cannot stand on his own, but he immediately pulled his wheelchair close to her bed ready to make it happen. My cousin, Serena, who is a physical therapist, helped him to his feet and held him up throughout the entire song.”

Right from the start, it’s easy to see the strong bond between the couple. Howard gently touches Laura’s face as they attempt to communicate back and forth.

According to Erin, her grandmother had macular degeneration, which affected her eye-sight allowing her to only see light and shadows. As for her grandfather, his hearing was mostly gone – the reason things needed to be repeated for him.

Yet, even with both of their senses altered it didn’t keep their love from pouring through.

After a short time the 1943 classic, “You’ll Never Know” begins to play in the background.

The version is from singers Rosemary Clooney and Harry James, which was the family’s favorite because they felt Laura’s voice sounded like Clooney’s. It’s a song that had a lot of meaning to the couple as Laura listened to it for comfort when Howard was fighting in WWII.

Erin shared a little more history about her grandparents and their connection to the tune. She explained:

“At family gatherings, it was not uncommon for the two of them to sing this song together, each taking a verse and serenading the other. In fact, after fifty years of marriage, they renewed their vows and performed this song as a duet for the entire family at the reception.”

She filmed a sweet rendition the family will never forget.

In the video, Laura can be heard speaking the words of the song at the one-minute mark. But then a moment later, Howard begins to sing “You’ll Never Know” to his wife while gently caressing her neck and face.

Let’s just say there wasn’t a dry eye in the room. In fact, the footage is so touching that it’s been viewed more than 15 million times online since.

Months later, Erin took to YouTube to share an update on her grandparents. As it turns out, they both had become angels.

She wrote:

“Eight months after this video was recorded Grandpa was actually the one to pass first. On May 15, 2016 Howard closed his eyes for the last time. Grandma (Laura Virginia) held on just five more days until she followed her love home on May 20, 2016. She was surrounded by members of our family who were singing her favorite hymn “How Great Thou Art” when she took her last breath. They both passed peacefully at home. They were laid to rest side by side on July 22, 2016 in Sarasota, FL. Our family misses them dearly and remembers them often! It usually includes, music, singing and dancing!”
