For most of us, driving is a pretty routine activity.
We rarely consider the fact that the speeds at which we are operating could land us in the hospital, or worse, should something go wrong.
For Kenny Franklin, this fact became all too real.
He was heading to work one Thursday morning in the back of an Uber that he had called.
Everything was shaping up to be another normal day when all of a sudden the driver of the Uber suffered a medical episode.
Franklin noticed that the man was having a seizure while they were driving down the freeway.
He recalls that the driver’s foot was, “accelerating on the gas, and instantly, I’m in the back seat wondering, ‘okay my life is pretty much over at this point.”’
Franklin acted fast and guided the car safely to the side of the road.
However, once the car was stopped, the driver awoke from his seizure.
He was frightened of course and started to act frantic.
Franklin told FOX 13 Tampa Bay, that the driver was unsure about where he was at and started to fumble with the gears, trying to get a hold of the situation.
At this point, Franklin decided to exit the vehicle where a highway patrol trooper was approaching the car.
The trooper had parked behind the vehicle on the side of the road and was coming up to Franklin to see what was going on.
At that moment, the driver of the car shifted into reverse and mistakenly hit the officer.
When he did so, it knocked the officer onto the street and the car ended up on top of him, pinning him to the ground.
Franklin was able to avoid the car but realized that the situation had just gone from bad to worse.
The cop was being crushed by the vehicle while laying in the street next to moving traffic.
Frankin had to act fast if he was going to be of any help so he decided to just try and lift the car off of the officer to free him.
Amazingly, Franklin was able to lift the car up high enough to allow the trooper to escape from underneath.
Now, I’m not sure if you’ve ever tried to lift up a car before, but they aren’t exactly light.
Franklin, himself, looks like a pretty strong guy, but what he did was still a pretty impressive feat.
Luckily, he had plenty of adrenaline pumping through his body and that seemed to give him the extra strength needed to lift the car off the officer.
The trooper was taken to the hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Franklin planned to meet up with the trooper once he was released from the hospital.
When asked if he would do this again should the situation ever arise, Franklin said:
“Absolutely, in a heartbeat. In a heartbeat.”
