Dogs are not angels, but they might as well be because of their overwhelming love, kindness, and loyalty, especially to the people who give them the love and care they deserve.

When Bryan Myers met Sadie, the dog had nowhere else to go but the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge in New Jersey. After three shelters turned the dog away, she had nowhere to stay but in the shelter. No one wanted the 100-pound dog who is not so great with men.

Even Megan Brinster, the shelter’s executive director, thought that Sadie would stay with them for good. It was the reason that the shelter was there for, anyway: to take the ones no one wants. But that was until Bryan came along.

“I thought, let me give this dog a chance because she’s beautiful and I think I can work through her issues,” the man said.

Bryan thought that he was the one rescuing Sadie, but as it turned out, Sadie is the one who saved his life.

It was the night after Bryan took Sadie in. He stood up from the bed, and that’s when everything took a turn for the worse.

“I was very lucky to have her the night that I had the stroke,” Bryan said. “I was getting up out of the bed and as soon as I stood up here, I fell straight down. And my cellphone was over there. And that’s when I grabbed her collar and she pulled me out of this little space here.”

The brave dog pulled the man across the room so he could grab his phone and call for help. She did all this without any formal training as a service dog. Her connection with Bryan may be new, but she definitely looked after him and showed him how much she cares.

With the help of Sadie, Bryan was able to get help and survived the stroke. He is lucky to be alive. And he sure is lucky to have Sadie that fateful night.

Bryan was brought to Englewood Health in Englewood, New Jersey to seek immediate medical treatment. He spent two weeks in treatment and rehabilitation. And before he got discharged, he was visited by a very excited guest.

“She just immediately jumped on me and was kissing my face, knocked my glasses and my mask off, and I just thought, I love this dog,” he said.

And if only Sadie could all, she would have said “I love you, too.”

Executive Director Megan Brinster pointed out that rescue dogs are usually extremely loyal. Sadie was a perfect example of how these animals can be very dependable and loving.

“When you have a dog who has lost something — all the dogs that come here have lost a family, a person, or they never quite had that. So when they make that connection, you really become their world,” Megan said.

Dogs like Sadie may seem to be the ones who need humans to survive, but really, we are the ones who need them to truly live. Their infinite love, compassion and loyalty are nothing short of amazing.
