Don’t think you’re cut out for tent living? Think again. The introduction of glamping has proved already that hanging out in a canvas living space doesn’t have to mean cooking dodgy meat on a single-use barbecue and sleeping on the floor with the bugs. Tent living can be so much more fashionable.
New Zealander Bryce Langston is a man who knows all about living in unconventional homes. He has a YouTube channel where he tours tiny homes and other cool, off-the-beaten-track house designs, showing his viewers how it’s possible to “escape the rent trap”.
It was about time that Bryce shared his own digs with his fans. He was actually in the process of building a tiny home, and in the meantime, he had built a lotus belle tent to live in.
Bryce wasn’t daunted by the prospect of living in a tent, as he knew by now that he could still achieve the luxury he was looking for beneath the canvas. And he truly did pull through with his design.
Lotus belle tents have a completely unique design, and Bryce fell in love with the style when he came across a picture of one on the internet. He thought that it was beautiful enough to live in – and, being a man who acted on his ideas, he decided that he’d do exactly that.
Bryce’s tent is about 16 feet in diameter. It’s made of heavy-duty canvas, so it’s a little fancier than your average camping tent. Inside, it’s much bigger, with a high “ceiling” and plenty of place for everything Bryce could need.
The open-plan design of the tent means that everything is in one space – the bedroom, the living room, dining room and kitchen.
When you first walk into Bryce’s belle tent home, you enter into his kitchenette. His countertop is made from a repurposed sideboard, with holes for the sinks and plumbing connections. There’s also a tiny chest fridge running off solar energy.
To keep him warm during the chilly nights, Bryce has a cozy wood stove that is specifically designed for use in belle tents and similar structures. To circulate the heat in the room, a small thermal electric fan switches on when the stove reaches over 50 degrees.
Bryce doesn’t have a lot of possessions, and the two chest of drawers on either side of his bed provide more than enough storage for his clothes, towels and linen.
The full-size bed in Bryce’s tent has an organic futon mattress that Bryce picked up on the internet secondhand. He made his own bed base from old ceiling batons.
Bryce’s favorite bargain buy is his dining table and chair set, which he paid $12 for. It has just enough room for plates and cutlery for two people.
You might be relieved to know that Bryce does have a bathroom, and it’s not just the bushes behind his tent. He can access it by a wooden platform, which gives the whole space a floating treehouse vibe.
The bathroom itself is incredibly unique, with wooden furnishings and walls made from bamboo.
