So, why on earth would anyone want to bury themselves alive? For John, it’s a mission. He wants to raise awareness for his charity, Walking Free, which helps drug addicts, alcoholics, self-harmers, and people with eating disorders. John aims to help these people start over and gain a new perspective on life.

John is a former drug addict himself and has been sober for over 23 years. Although his addiction is in his past, he understands the struggles and difficulties of getting and staying clean. While he was battling addiction, John had cancer twice, Hepatitis C, a liver transplant, and at times, he felt suicidal.

John will be buried alive for three nail-biting days; he will, however, have Wi-Fi to live stream the stunt, a pillow, and a duvet.

“I know this is a radical move but people are continually contacting me who are either suicidal or who know friends or family who are,” he told Belfast Live. “My plan is to speak to them from the grave before they get there and show them hope.”

John is now a devout Christian and wants to share his story “from the grave” in hopes that it will touch people on a deeper level. He overdosed 20 times as a drug addict and, although he cheated death many times, has a new appreciation for the value of life.

During his time underground, John will be using the hashtag #GraveChat to speak with others via social media.

John has been buried alive multiple times; a few times overseas and for the very first time in the U.S.A. in November of 2017. He broadcasts his three days of being underground through his Facebook page and keeps his followers updated on his burials through his blog.

Visiting John’s Walking Free website, he shares a motivating and welcoming introductory video. He opens with these encouraging words:

“We know the steps to freedom here at Walking Free.

And we want to take you by the hand, we want to talk to you straight, we want to be loving and gentle with you but strong with you as well, to help you get that place.

You have a future.”
