The novel coronavirus pandemic and the measures that have been taken all around the world to keep people safe have brought about many changes in our everyday lives. For instance, our children don’t go to school, many of us don’t go to work and often have to work from home, while senior citizens that live in nursing homes cannot receive any visitors for fear of contracting an infection.
One of those elderly citizens is Marion Avtger, 81 years old, who has been living in a nursery home for quite some time. However, she never felt alone because her husband of 61 years used to pay her daily visits that lasted several hours.
Unfortunately, when the pandemic emerged and the World Health Organization concluded that old age is a factor that can cause severe illness due to the infection, senior citizens were advised to stay home. Also, elderly people who lived in nursing homes were not allowed to have any visitors for as long as this pandemic is going on, to prevent the spread of the virus in senior communities.
This meant that Marion’s husband, Nick, 88, could not see her anymore. And this broke his heart.
Of course, their three children could not bear seeing their father so heartbroken or thinking that their mother would feel lonely in a nursing home room for such a long time. So, they decided to come up with an alternative plan that would help their father visit his wife.
“So my grandpa hasn’t been able to visit grandma since her nursing home locked down due to COVID-19,” Nick and Marion’s grand-daughter, Sydney, wrote in her post on Facebook, “so by the great power of the Avtges mind my dad (and friends) were able to arrange a bucket truck so they could see each other!!!”
Sydney’s post featured a video in which her grandpa can be seen in a cherry picker being lifted in the air, approaching his wife’s window outside Maristhill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Waltham, Massachusetts.
The man, wearing a mask and everything, was also holding a piece of paper that read “I love you sweetheart”.
“I asked my wife Marion, and I said ‘How much do you love me?'” Nick Avtges told the local news, “and she said ‘More than you know.'”
The couple then shared a few special moments together, even though separated by a window, but at least they knew one was still there for the other.
“We touched each other through the screen,” Avtges said. “Our fingertips touched.”
The sweet couple is planning on going on a vacation when all this madness is over. And we are sure they will have a great time.
It is really heart-warming to see people like them being still, after 61 years of marriage, fond of each other and ready to do anything just to see their better half one more time.
