A few weeks ago, a boy from Santa Ana, California, received the best gift ever, and he couldn’t stop screaming with joy.
About two years ago, little Jacob, now 7 years old, was diagnosed with Wilm’s tumor, a rare type of kidney cancer. This type of disease mostly affects children between the ages of 3 and 5, and it becomes even more rare after that age.
However, young Jacob is still fighting with it, and it seems that the disease has spread to his lungs as well. Still, Wilm’s tumor is a treatable type of cancer, so all Jacob needs to do is be patient and keep fighting bravely as he has done so far.
The 7-year-old boy has undergone more than 50 rounds of chemotherapy, and numerous surgeries, while he has needed to stay for a month in isolation at the hospital.
In fact, that was one of the most difficult parts of this road to beating his disease. Not being able to go outside or see anyone made Jacob really sad, and- as you can imagine- it was one of those times when he needed to know that others were thinking of him the most.
And they did. Every day, he would receive messages from different people in his hospital mailbox.
“All the doctors and nurses, child life specialists, even patients, other kids on the other floors, would write him a note, knowing that he wasn’t able to leave his room,” Jacob’s mom told abc7. “So, it was excitement for him every day to check the mailbox.”
Jacob developed a special connection with the mail, and he just kept delivering the mail to his parents when he eventually returned home.
“He would dress up like a mailman,” said the boy’s father. “He would get the mail, come back, and basically hand it out to us.”
Delivering the mail on a daily basis just made Jacob so excited that his parents decide to surprise him with a tour of the local post office.
His mom knew that this would make him happy, so he called to ask if they could do this for him. However, the post office and the mailman that had been delivering mail to their door for years had a better idea.
“I wanted to make sure that his wish was taken care of,” said Van Singletary, the postman that has seen this family grow over the years.
So, this time, he delivered a special mail to this sweet boy.
Jacob couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw that there was a postal truck just for him. On top of that, there was also a brand new uniform, and post-related accessories. His sister, Ava, was excited too, when they got to drive in their new truck for a while.
The boy’s parents didn’t know how to thank everyone for this kind gesture.
“What [Singletary] did will be something we remember for the rest of our lives,” said Jacob’s dad.
