We tend to neglect the small things in life, little do we know, these things that we often overlook mean a lot to other people. It’s like what most people always say, “big surprises come in small packages.”

Let’s take old magazines as an example, we buy them on a per edition or per monthly issue basis. Then comes the following month, we will just put them aside or somewhere together with other old magazines that we have, wouldn’t you agree?

However, this is not the case for this 19-year-old girl. She had been collecting old magazines from her grandpa since she’s a kid. Now that she’s grown-up, she transformed those old magazines into something beautiful to surprise her beloved “Pops”.
Meet Madeline Rector.

Talking about how she started collecting magazines from her grandpa, according to her website:
“Ever since I was a kid, my grandfather has been giving me magazines. Every Sunday after church, my family would go eat lunch with my grandparents. My sister and I were just kids and got very bored at the table. Noticing this, my sweet Pops gave my sister and me a magazine or two to fill our time. They usually consisted of Birds and Blooms, Audubon and, my personal favorite, National Geographic.”

Instead of just keeping the magazines dusty and aging in a closet, she decided to make good use of them, and turn them into something beautiful. Because of her grandpa’s old magazines, she became fond of making mosaics which she now calls “Magazine mosaics.”
From space consumers to beautiful pieces of a masterpiece.

Who could’ve thought that you’d find such beautiful art creations from some old magazines? It seems like Madeline’s inner artistic soul is really beyond what an ordinary human possesses.
Why magazine mosaics?
“The element of these mosaics that is most impacting is how they are affected by light. Depending on the positioning of a light source(s) the piece will appear different. If you position a light directly above the artwork, the edge of every single piece of paper will illuminate, creating a striking, cracked look, like shattered stained-glass. There is something beautiful about the contrast of the seemingly-harsh, rough edges of the individual pieces of paper and the multidimensional, almost translucent, aspects of a portrait.”
Finding the right color from some old magazines is not that easy.

But not for the creative mind of Madeline. She’s able to make some real-looking portraits from her magazine mosaic creations. How she’s able to find and mix those bits of paper and turn them into wonderful art creations is really amazing.

Just imagine the amount of time and energy that she has spent to come up with each piece of magazine mosaics. You just don’t need to be an artist to do that, you must also be a hard worker.
Time to surprise her grandpa.
