The brave men and women who put their lives on the line for the freedom and rights of others really deserve all of our respect and admiration, but it’s a sad fact that many veterans come back to civilian life and feel a little left out, overlooked, or ignored.

Fortunately, amazing companies like Lowe’s Home Improvement exist to help them out.

Lowe’s has developed a reputation over the years for offering jobs to vets and one Texas location went even further by hiring a vet and his dog!

U.S. Air Force veteran Clay Luthy bravely and boldly served his country on three separate deployments.

He suffered injuries to one of his legs, requiring several surgeries, including a reconstructive knee surgery that left him unable to properly bend his leg.

Due to this disability, Clay wasn’t allowed to re-enlist, so he started looking for a job, and one faithful furry friend was by his side the whole time.

Clay’s service dog, Charlotte, accompanied him everywhere. She’s a Golden Retriever who was specially trained to help Clay up if he fell down and couldn’t get back to his feet.

Clay needed Charlotte to be by his side pretty much at all times, as he never knew when he might need her help.

So, when he went for an interview with Lowe’s, he brought his canine companion along as he wanted to check whether or not the store would have a problem with his situation.

Clay was thrilled to hear the Lowe’s manager say that Charlotte was 100% welcome in the store. He even explained to Clay that there were several other service dogs working throughout the Lowe’s network.

And a few weeks later, Clay was offered the job!

It was some of the best news he’d received in a long time! As a disabled vet, he says he can’t stand the idea of just sitting around at home doing nothing. He felt the need to stay as active as possible and wanted some kind of work to keep him occupied, so he was really excited to start work at Lowe’s.

The employer has even been super flexible with Clay, setting up a part-time schedule that works for both him and Charlotte.

Charlotte goes to work with Clay every single day, always by his side in case he needs her, and since the hours are so flexible, it’s easy for Clay to give Charlotte the rest she needs throughout the working week.

Charlotte even got her very own Lowe’s work vest, made specially for her by Clay, and has proven popular with customers who like to say hello and stroke her fur.

It’s an inspiring story, and it’s wonderful to see a great employer like this actually going the extra mile for vets. Brave military members like Clay have done so much for all of us, so it’s only natural that we repay them however we can, and Lowe’s is setting a super example.
