Dancing is a joy that allows us to express ourselves with our whole bodies. And there are all different kinds of dances that allow us to express this joy.

Shag is one of those dances. It’s originally known as the Carolina shag.

The shag, which is a recognized dance in national and international dance competitions around the U.S.. is a six-count, eight-step patterned dance in a slot that’s done in couples.

It’s normally danced to beach music, as the shag is believed to have been started at the Atlantic Ocean in Cherry Grove Beach, South Carolina in the 1940s.

But some argue that the term “shag” was coined on Carolina Beach in North Carolina, according to Wikipedia. The dance is believed to have grown out of the Carolina Jitterbug and the Little Apple dances.

Nowadays people dance in Shag clubs like the Captial City Shag Club, a non-profit organization that enjoys shagging located in “Famously Hot” Columbia, South Carolina and was established in 2008.

Groups like these get to perform at events like the Shag Extravaganza.

Shag dance team Jeremy Webb and Taylor Perkinson performed at Shag Extravaganza VIII and really wowed the crowd.

Taylor is a former Virginia Junior Shagger and member of the Richmond Shag Club. She and Jeremy placed third in the Pro Division at the 2018 National Shag Dance Championships in North Myrtle Beach.

For Taylor, shag is a family affair.

She was introduced to the dance by her aunt, Nancy, Wall, who is an instructor at the Richmond Shag Club. She attended her first competition at the age of 10 but became serious about competing when she was 15.

“Now this is what we love. I love working with Jeremy. We’ve done this for years,” the DJ announced.
