It’s a true blessing when we can look back in time and remember all those childhood moments when we were so little and our parents were there, a permanent feature in our lives.

The next story is not only going to restore your faith in the goodness we all have inside but it will make you cry buckets! This is a story about a little girl who lost her dad a little too soon and about a man that showed us that blood bonds aren’t necessary when there are love and kindness.

Meet Avey Cox, a second-grader at Central Elementary School in Van Buren, Arkansas.

Avey’s school would organize yearly a father-daughter dance where all the little girls would dress-up for the night, wearing fancy clothes and they would be accompanied by their dads as their dance-partners. Everything would be very formal, like a mini-prom!

However, Avey’s dad had died earlier this year and Avey wouldn’t be able to attend.

As Avey’s mom, Angelia Bernard, told TODAY, “they were very close” and “Avey wanted to go to the dance but didn’t have anyone to take her.”

Fortunately though for Avey and some other girls in the school, the solution was given by Jamie Hammond, Van Buren’s police chief. Hammond contacted the school and suggested that police officers could help fill in for the missing dads and take the little girls to the dance.

And this is how Nicol “Nick” Harvey, a 43-year-old police officer ended up being Avey’s “dad” for the school dance. Harvey whose daughters used to participate in this event too in the previous years, felt a bit down as he couldn’t go anymore. “I didn’t think I’d ever get to experience it again,” said Harvey.

After Hammond’s proposal was accepted, Harvey didn’t waste any time communicating with Avey’s mom, offering his services as a “dad” for the evening.

“I bought a new tie and handkerchief to match Avey’s dress and I ordered a corsage,” Harvey explained. And, don’t they look matching?

Avey was so excited and happy to be able to participate in the school event after this difficult time her family had had. A girl at the dance asked Avey if Harvey was her dad and she replied, “No, this is our school resource officer”.

Harvey witnessing the scene, stepped in to save the night by saying, “Well, tonight, I’m her dad”, making Avey shine with happiness!

Avey’s mom confessed that “it was such a bright spot in the hard month we’ve had. Avey keeps saying it was the best night ever”.

And, it’s totally expected as children experience everything much more intensely than adults, so you can imagine her psychology after losing her dad.

Harvey explained that “I know she’s not my kid, but for a couple of hours, it felt like she really was. I even get to twirl her. We’ve really become best friends through all this”. Who knows maybe this is the beginning of a lifelong friendship!
