A little girl named Brooklyn Andracke loved the neighborhood garbage man. She would always wave at him from her window.

Thursday was garbage day and for about a year, Brooklyn would anxiously wait for the garbage truck to pass by so she could wave. The garbage man would wave back too.

Brooklyn’s mom got curious, so she decided to find out why.

Her mother posted on Facebook, “For about a year now, Brooklyn has anxiously awaited the garbage truck’s arrival at our house. It started with waving from the window, then we had to try and be outside to wave, and when we missed the truck driving by the house, I’d drive around the neighborhood to find the garbage truck and wave… on our way out the door in the mornings.”

A year went by, and soon, Brooklyn’s birthday arrived.

Brooklyn wanted the garbage man to be a part of her special day, so she set aside one of her birthday cupcakes to give to him.

That gave her mom the perfect opportunity to speak to the garbage man.

As the truck came down the street, Brooklyn ran to the corner and waved. Her mom motioned for the man to come over, and when he got out, he gave them a big smile.

Brooklyn was speechless as she handed him the cupcake.

Delvar was so drawn to Brooklyn because he didn’t have kids, but he did mentor children whenever he could.

Brooklyn was so happy to finally meet Delvar that on the way to daycare after their first meeting. All it took was for her to finally meet her friend, whom, until recently, she just saw drive by and wave.

Delvar Dopson was well-known in the community but was often reserved, so not many people really got to talk to him. He’d been a sanitation worker in that neighborhood for years, though.

Eventually, a friendship blossomed. Dopson stopped by Brooklyn’s house carrying gifts for the little girl.

“He pulled out the most amazing, awesome, and generous birthday gifts for her,” says the mother.

It was full of toys from “Frozen”, Brooklyn’s favorite movie!

Brooklyn and her mom were so touched that they made a big note with the words “THANK YOU DELVAR” which moved Dopson to tears.

He proudly hung the note on his truck too!

“Thank you for the joy that you bring Brooklyn every Thursday morning, for making her birthday special, and for making my heart happy. It may be a little thing that you do, but it means so much to us! Thanks, Delvar, for your kindness and your service to the City!” Brooklyn’s mother concluded on Facebook.
