Lilly Nicholas was only three-years-old when she helped deliver a baby lamb in her family’s barn. The birthing footage was so incredible it took the internet by storm, captivating viewers across the globe.
It all started one day at the Nicholas’ farm in Raglan, Wales – where the young girl lives with her parents and older sister. Lilly had spent her entire life there, so she had grown accustomed to caring for the animals.
Your typical toddler probably hasn’t witnessed the miracle of birth. But according to Lilly’s mom Rachel, her daughter had watched other lambs being delivered in the past.
As it turns out, one of those births happened just before the one captured on film, where Lilly acted as mid-wife. Rachel explained to Wales Online:
“On the day the video was filmed I had just delivered a lamb and Lilly had been watching me. So when another ewe was about to give birth she rolled her sleeves up and said she’d do it.”
Just like her mama had done earlier – Lilly jumped into action.
Wearing her orange farm overalls, the toddler can be seen kneeling next to a sheep who was in the “lambing process.” With her mom’s guidance, she lifts its tail and sticks her hands inside to be of assistance.
Rachel helps her daughter by asking questions determining the animal’s position.
She asks the small girl,
“What can you feel? Can you feel anything?”
Lilly searches with her hands and discovers she can feel the lamb’s tiny feet. Rachel then prompts her to pull on the baby so she can try and find the nose as well.
What’s most amazing is that Lilly doesn’t hesitate for a moment during the process. After growing up on a farm she seems comfortable and like a real natural.
In her interview with Wales Online, Rachel said:
“She’s obviously seen me deliver lambs before and I sometimes tell her ‘here’s the head’ and ‘here’s the feet’ so she knows how everything works.”
Finally, the nursery-school student makes an important discovery. She tells her mom that she can “feel its mouth.”
That’s obviously the last key Rachel was looking for, leading her to direct Lilly:
“There you are then – pull away then!”
Understandably, the baby is quite “slippery,” which makes it difficult for the mini mid-wife to get a good grasp of it to pull. Although Rachel offers to help – Lilly seems determined to deliver the lamb herself.
It’s a moment they had been waiting for.
Eventually, Lilly successfully gets a hold of the two front feet and with more work (and a teeny bit of her mom’s assistance) she pulls the baby out. Adorably she yells, “I got it!”
Rachel asks her daughter to identify if the lamb is a boy or girl, and it turned out to be a girl! Lilly is thrilled with the finding.
While it may have been just a normal day on the farm for the Nicholas family – the rest of the world was amazed by the footage.
Quickly, the video went viral and caught the attention of news publications from all over. Rachel was stunned by the overwhelming response.
