Jon Stewart’s life has been dedicated to service for more than two decades.
America looked to Stewart to tell them the truth about their nation between 1999 and 2015 when he was the host of “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.”
The comedian’s show was one of the only places where Americans could learn about the most important issues facing their country in a manner that held both Democrats and their Republican counterparts accountable.
It was indeed a sad day when Stewart hosted his last episode. But Stewart continued to work in service after that and made headlines instead of reading them when he announced his plans to turn a farm into an animal rescue site with his wife Tracey Stewart.
The couple partnered with Farm Sanctuary to turn their New Jersey farm into a safe place for animals in need of rescue.
“We bought a farm in New Jersey with the intention of starting a farm sanctuary of our own with an educational center, but what I’m announcing tonight is that our farm is actually going to be the New Jersey branch of Farm Sanctuary. We’re going to build new advocates, new curious learners, and new leaders for this very important movement,” said Tracey, who is an activist and author, told CBS This Morning.
Farm Sanctuary was founded in 1986 to help end the abuse of animals in factory farming.
According to the organization’s website, they are now the largest farm animal rescue and protection organization in the U.S.
They’ve rescued thousands of animals on their farms in New York and California and now the Stewarts’ farm is another place where these animals can find a happy and safe home.
“At Farm Sanctuary, these animals are our friends, not our food. We educate millions of people about their plight and the effects of factory farming on our health and environment. We advocate for laws and policies to prevent suffering and promote compassion, and we reach out to legislators and businesses to bring about institutional reforms,” their website reads. “Farm Sanctuary remains committed to ending cruelty to farm animals and promoting compassionate vegan living through rescue, education, and advocacy efforts.”
The Stewarts have rescued their fair share of animals. They rescued a bull named Frank and helped save two goats that somehow ended up on the New York City Subway line in Brooklyn.
“Tracey’s always real good about getting the animals to calm down and feel safe. I never know what she’s going to come back with. It’s usually OK, long as it’s not an animal of prey. We draw the line at panthers,” Stewart said, according to Parade.
Their first rescue was two pigs named Anna and Maybelle. Their New Jersey farm now also includes chickens, sheep, cows, and other livestock.
Tracey also wrote a book, “Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better” whose proceeds benefit Farm Sanctuary.
“As animal lovers, we can always do and be more for those who depend on us. When we make changes in our lives — whether big or small — that move us toward seeking compassion for others, we are moving in the right direction,” Tracey wrote on the Hockshockson Farm website.
I believe anything is possible and change can happen in the world when we as individuals live by our beliefs and let kindness be our inspiration. Remember to Do Unto Animals when you’re Doing Unto Others! I’ve learned more often than not, the rescued animal is the human, and the rescuer usually has four legs (or sometimes 3, or wings, or fins…you get the picture).”
