Paul Murphy was out jogging when he saw the Polito family’s garage on fire. The family from Scotts Valley, California was out of town so Murphy, thinking quickly, alerted the homeowners using the doorbell’s camera.
He rang the doorbell but only got a recorded message. Finally, a woman answered after seeing him running back and forth outside.
“Hello. There’s smoke coming out of the top of your house,” Paul told Courtney Polito.
Courtney gave Murphy the security code when she heard the smoke alarms. He entered and found their two Dachshunds, rabbit, and cat who were all trapped inside the house.
“It was terrifying. When I answered the doorbell and saw the smoke, I panicked immediately,” Courtney told Inside Edition.
“The first thing that went through my mind was, ‘Get my pets out of the house, please,’” she said.
Paul quickly made his way inside and rescued all the animals.
“It takes a special kind of person go into a burning house to save animals,” Tony Polito said.
Murphy’s heroic actions prevented the fire from spreading beyond the garage. It was the house that suffered from smoke damage. Cabinets and Christmas presents were ruined.
The Chevy Blazer suffered damaged as well.
Scotts Valley Fire Battalion Chief Andrew LoFranco said that this is “the first for our agency where someone uses a Ring doorbell system to alert the 911 and the homeowners.”
The Polito family wanted to show their gratitude to the selfless jogger, but Murphy took off after rescuing the family’s pets.
“I want to give him a hug. I’ll bring him to lunch. I’ll bring him dinner,” Courtney said. “I don’t know… I just want to thank him so much and let him know how thankful we are. My kids, my husband we would be devastated if we lost our pets let alone our home.”
Murphy was out jogging in a yellow T-shirt with a star on the front and back while sporting a dark-colored beanie with an outline of the state of Arizona. He also had a distinct accent.
He literally saved the family’s home. All their possessions could have been lost and burnt down in 10 minutes according to the fire department.
Here’s another heroic rescue story wherein a single mother saved her four children, ages 4, 6, 12, and 9 months.
Mikala Vish bravely rescued all four of her kids. She suffered second- and third-degree burns as a result of a fire that broke out in their home on the morning of October 26.
The Dexter Fire Department witnessed Mikala getting one of her kids out of the burning home before she rushed back inside to retrieve the rest.
Mikala and her six-year-old, Torin, were the only ones who suffered injuries. Torin had severe burns on his hands and arms. The good news is that both are recovering and showing incredible progress.
