We ALL need comedy in our lives. There is something immensely important about acknowledging how silly our lives can be and making fun of it. Humor is often what moves societies forward, too! Where else can you address taboo topics than in the comedy club?
“A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs. It’s jolted by every pebble on the road.” –Henry Ward Beecher
While there are full-time comics out there, comedic storytelling isn’t something that many people practice.
Still, it’s one of those things that EVERYONE does! It’s almost an essential part of human culture. Telling a funny story is about as human as things get. In fact, the best jokes are often told in the form of stories.
Jimmy Stewart told a joke during an interview once that absolutely slayed.
Jimmy Stweart, one of the most famous actors in cinema history, was being interviewed when he dropped a banger of a joke. The video was filmed in 1984 but released on YouTube and it’s definitely worth a watch.
James Maitland “Jimmy” Stewart was an American actor. Known for his distinctive drawl and everyman screen persona, Stewart’s film career spanned 80 films from 1935 to 1991. With the strong morality he portrayed both on and off the screen, he epitomized the “American ideal” in the twentieth century. – Wikipedia
Starting off the joke, Jimmy sets the stage.
He describes two people, a married couple, sitting and having breakfast together. The husband, John, and the wife, Margaret, are enjoying their morning when Margaret breaks the calm moment.
“John, if I would die, would you get married right away?”
Jimmy continues the story with an air of indignation as John:
“Here I am this beautiful morning having a nice breakfast together when you bring up this terrible thing about death – what a terrible thing to do.”
You can clearly see there is a buildup happening here!
Margaret the wife, persists.
Despite John pushing the question aside and refusing to answer such a hard question, Margaret continues. She asks him over and over again each day. Whenever they sit down for a meal Margaret finds a new way to ask the question, hoping her husband will answer.
Finally, John gives in.
After her nagging, John finally gives in. Giving up, he tells her if he would get married after she died.
“Yes, I would, does that settle it?”, John replied.
She continued, “would you also sell the house?”
“No, no, I wouldn’t sell the house.”
“How about the bed?”
“No honey, of course not.”
“Well, you certainly wouldn’t let her use my golf clubs, right honey?”
Looking up, John explains, “No, no, never. She’s left-handed!”
It was a BIG lead-up to the joke, but Jimmy absolutely nailed it!
Now, that’s a punchline!
