Just a few days before the New Year arrives and along with it, the hopes of people that 2021 will be better and less fatal than this last year.

If one looks back in 2020 will probably take notice of many significant social and natural events that took place. However, one has stood out the most as it is still quite much around, “threatening” our wellbeing.

The virus COVID-19 took us by surprise nearly a year ago, as it spread throughout the globe, leaving a trail of disease and panic in its wake. Our daily lives changed as we had to adapt to a new reality, following an endless list of security measures, confining at home, and wearing masks nearly everywhere.

However, the people who were hit the hardest were those working in the frontlines, in the hospitals, who had to be at the side of the sick, treating them and trying to save their lives. Thus today this article is dedicated to all those brave men and women who worked hard next to their patients.

Meet Kathryn, a 28-year-old ICU nurse that graduated from nursing school in May. She told to Buzzfeed, “some shifts are eerily slow and quiet, while others are 12-plus hours of all-out chaos.”

Working at the hospitals during these difficult times of COVID-19 can be really tough especially for the healthcare workers. So, Kathryn decided to show the world how exhausting and difficult has been for them. On her Twitter account, she shared her own version of the “How It Started vs. How It’s Going” meme that’s been going around.

Her tweet immediately went viral and thousands were those that decided to retweet, reaching nearly a million likes!

Kathryn wrote on her thread, “Didn’t exactly expect to be a new nurse in the middle of a highly politicized pandemic but life comes at you fast, and even in a pandemic, there’s nothing else I want to do. Caring for the sickest of the sick is an honor and I treasure my patients.”

Kathryn also explained to Buzzfeed why COVID-19 is so special and so hard on the patients, “when you die of COVID-19, you die alone in a hospital room with glass doors, with no privacy or dignity. You die away from your family and surrounded by strangers wearing so much PPE, they look like aliens. You die with tubes coming out of almost every orifice. You die slowly and painfully and brutally, and I don’t want that for any of you.”

She shared this message in hope that people will finally understand the severity of the situation and take all the necessary and suggested measures to ensure their and their loved one’s safety. “[COVID] is a brutal disease and I wouldn’t wish the worst of it on my worst enemy. Please understand that you aren’t just protecting yourself, you are protecting the people around you,” added Kathryn.

Hopefully, the citizens will understand this is a very serious situation where all of us need to work together in order to emerge as unscathed as possible. Let’s applaud all those healthcare workers who are putting their lives on the line daily in order to help the rest of us survive. Follow the imposed safety measures, if not for you, do it for them!
