Sometimes, unforeseen life events happen. But thankfully, there are lots of brave men and women who can help us out in these difficult times. Firefighters are one of those people we often call when we’re in trouble.

Firefighters are everyday heroes in the community, and they also help people in need.

And sometimes, they also help animals in need.

One dog specifically found himself in a bit of a predicament. Neighbors in Wells, Maine, began to panic when they discovered the big, 10-year-old Husky who goes by the name of Jasper on a roof.

Somehow the rather large dog managed to climb out onto the window and onto the roof and was having trouble getting back inside.

Either the window closed shut or no one was home to see what the dog had done, but one thing was for sure: he was good and stuck on that rooftop, which was about 15 feet up high.

As neighbors discovered this strange occurrence, they naturally became worried and called the Wells Police, who then sent the Wells Professional Firefighters Association.

Upon arrival, the firefighters were able to confirm that indeed, Jasper was in a bit of a bind.

However, the dog wasn’t expressing any signs of concern. He seemed to be pretty calm and content for the most part.

“The call came in for a dog stuck on a roof. My first thought was on the roof of a car, but I didn’t exactly know what was going on,” said Captain Jeff Nawfel of the Wells Fire Department. “Myself and another firefighter who was there with me made the decision that we would ladder the building by ourselves and that we were going to put the dog inside.”

Captain Nawfel ended up being the hero of this story. While the team brought a ladder truck, he ended up simply climbing a ladder up to the roof.

Once he was there, he helped the dog find his way back inside through the window.

But wait, it gets better. Jasper was so grateful for Captain Nawfel’s heroic rescue, he actually thanked him in the cutest way possible, and it has the entire internet freaking out.

The dog thanked the firefighter with one big, sloppy, wet kiss!

“Friendly dog. Kinda gave me a smooch on the way in the house and that was the end of it and I came down the ladder,” Nawfel said.

The fire department shared the story on their Facebook page, and after that, the smooch totally went viral.

News outlets everywhere were reaching out to Captain Nawfel for comment.

It’s wild that a story so small could stir up the internet so much, with all of the news that breaks every single day.

“It floors me that, out of anything going on, this has gotten the attention that it has. It’s crazy. Absolutely crazy,” Nawfel said.

“You know there’s always the thought of the firemen going to rescue the cat out of the trees… it’s the ongoing thing. But a dog on the roof is a first.”

Jasper’s owners must be happy that not only is their pup safe, but he’s also famous!

What a relief to see this dog is safe. And the way he expressed his gratitude was the absolute sweetest.
