Cole George is a supportive husband and father from Las Vegas, Nevada. His other half is Ashley – a loving wife and mother who dedicates every ounce of herself to caring for others. That’s because she’s also a nurse.
Life can be extremely busy and stressful when you have kids. But then to add on a career that’s demanding of the mind, body, and soul takes a special person. No one knows this more than Cole, who couldn’t be prouder of his nurse wife Ashley.
As a way to honor his wife, Cole decided to express his feelings through a Facebook post that’s now gone viral. In it, he also shared the eye-opening realities that go along with her career.
Cole titled the post “Nurse life,” and opened it saying:
“When you marry a nurse, you marry their job. There are a lot of missed opportunities. Missed events with the kids, missed meals with the family. Deep down you accept it, you realize that THIS is their calling. THIS is their passion.”
In order to make a household work, it takes a team effort. The George’s also try and keep all their balls in the air with this technique – and Cole is happy to do anything to make Ashley comfortable because of her hectic days.
He explained:
“As my nurse sleeps, I quietly clean the house for her, do the dishes, prepare meals, do laundry, so when she is leaving the house an hour before she has to be at her pre shift, she has a clean home, clean scrubs and somewhat sane children, and a meal ready to go for her.”
There’s a reason why he does it though. Being the partner of a nurse, Cole’s there to hear about all of the experiences Ashley goes through.
“When my nurse gets home she tells me about her night, allll the crazy that went into her night. Patients coding, patients getting combative. Sitting with her patients knowing they are dying, making them as comfortable as possible, boxing up those emotions so she does not carry them home. Coming home to see her children smile and say they love her. Knowing that they are taken care of and not having to worry.”
He also shared a comical inside story about Ashley and her sock-choice for work.
“Nurses are superstitious in many ways, mine wears the worst socks only to taunt the nursing gods. Yet she makes it through each night, talking about her “dumpster fires”, and “sh*t shows”. Then there is the question I ask “what dam socks are you wearing?” (They say “ringmaster of the sh*t show”). I remind her that I’m going to burn them in some ritualistic way to please the nursing gods.”
Everybody needs to vent sometimes. Cole likes to be a listening ear for Ashley, and surely, she’s appreciative of it.
“She calls me on her way home in the morning, (5 hours after her shift should have ended), to stay awake. I let her talk, I let her vent, I let her know that she is an amazing mother, nurse, wife. She gives her 100% day in and out. So I do the same. I know it’s not just me sleeping alone. It is also her. So I make sure the bed is made when she comes home.”
Most of us would do anything in the world for the people that we adore. For Cole, it’s obvious he’s very much in love with his wife Ashley and has a great deal of admiration for all that she does as a nurse.
“It’s the little things that matter. They all count, in return I don’t ask her for anything that she can’t give easily. She has done so much for others in her last 16 hour shift. She missed her meal to give meds, her bladder is about to explode but she does her rounds. She has her nurses go on break so she misses hers, she digs in her bag for her “trash panda” snacks. Attached are sticky notes that tell her to have a good night, and that we love her, and to stop eating junk.”
He continued:
“Meanwhile I’m doing homework with 4 kids and making dinner and lunches for the next day. All so that she does not have to worry. We love our nurse, mom, wife and best friend. Get some rest babe you don’t have to work tonight and we can make dinner together. I’ll even rub your feet”
It’s not surprising that people everywhere have been touched by Cole’s words that honor both his wife and nurses in general. As of now, his post has been shared more than 9,500 times on Facebook and has gathered over 1,500 comments as well.
Thank you to all the selfless nurses in this world for all that you do!
