Working in the hospital exposes you to tons of different people. Some of them are meant to cross your life for a short period of time. Others are meant to change your life forever.

Amy works as a respiratory therapist at St. Louis Hospital.

There, she met Charlie, a boy with cerebral palsy. Despite his condition, he has never failed to make everyone smile. He’s just a lovable child.

Charlie’s condition affects his entire body.

There’s spasticity throughout his muscles and that makes it extra hard for him to move around. He even has a trach and feeding tube to help him cope with everyday life.

Even though the child’s condition was poor, his parents still managed to abandon him at the hospital.

It’s not clear why they did it but the mom just gave up on him. Fortunately, someone was there to accept and love the child.

Amy fell in love with Charlie at first sight.

Knowing his condition, she decided to adopt him and give him the kind of home he deserves. She believes that the kid is amazing and that he needs someone to look after him.

It’s not easy for Amy.

First, she adopted Charlie, a child with special needs, as a single parent. Plus, she’s taking care of two other foster kids. Despite the challenges, Amy is motivated to give them the best life possible.

As part of Charlie’s treatment and rehabilitation, the family and friends believe that having an adaptive bike would help him.

They think that it’ll help strengthen his lower legs as well as improve his overall balance. The more he exercises with it, the better his chances of improving in life.

That’s when the KMOV4 Surprise Squad stepped in.

They planned the surprise really well. A part of it involved making Amy believe that they were there to help Charlie transition to kindergarten.

Everyone acted so well that Amy actually believed their setup.

When she was finished telling her story, they had to reveal the surprise. At that point, Amy was already in tears.

Her family and friends showed up for support. The group also presented the two with the adaptive bike Charlie needs to practice his motion. It was made just for him!

The Surprise Squad also had a surprise for Amy.

Working in the hospital isn’t easy and so is taking care of a special needs child. That’s why they decided to treat her with a spa gift certificate. With everything she does, Amy deserves a good break.

They even got her a new pair of shoes. She got her foot done to treat her big toe and getting new shoes that are designed just for her feet would be a big help.

Amy was just super thankful.

“Thank you all for everything you guys have done. So I know he’s a much better little boy from having everybody here in his life. Like people always say that he’s the lucky one but it’s the opposite way. I’m the lucky one.”
