It took six long years for Randy Owen, Teddy Gentry and Jeff Cook to earn a major label deal before their music was heard all over the country. This was around forty years ago which meant that there was no social media to aid the boys of Alabama in spreading their talents.
They are in the country music hall of fame and the Hollywood walk of fame. Country music was never the same again when these guys made it big.
The southern legends still perform.
No rest for the rock stars. Country a cappella group Home Free ditched instruments, relying solely on their voices to create wonderful harmonies and melodies that have delighted fans everywhere.
Here’s an early Christmas present. Home Free featuring Alabama singing “Christmas in Dixie“.
The song was released as a single back in 1982 and included in Alabama’s 1985 Christmas album. It is really a country song that shows how the south eastern states celebrate Christmas. This song is on every southerner’s Christmas playlist.
You can check out the lyrics and what they mean courtesy of Atlanta Magazine.
Home Free really does sound awesome live. You’d think there was a band playing real instruments but it’s just voices providing that rhythmic background allowing Alabama to sing their classic hit.
“By now in New York City, there’s snow on the ground
And out in California, the sunshine’s falling down
And, maybe down in Memphis, Graceland’s all in lights
And in Atlanta, Georgia, there’s peace on earth tonight”
Did you get the reference to Elvis? The King loved Christmas!
Such a catchy tune. And it’s not difficult to sing either. It is one of those songs that lends itself well to a bunch of friends singing over a warm fire with opened presents and mugs of hot chocolate.
Check out those harmonies. It’s very addicting!
“Still can’t believe this actually happened. Thanks for watching one of the highlights of our careers. Hope you’re staying safe and healthy and happy this holiday season.”
Says a viewer named Rob.
Eight super talented men sharing the stage for a Christmas song with the intention of lighting up everyone’s holiday season. There are proud wives and kids watching this one that’s for sure!
The words of the song help paint a picture of what Christmas is like in those states mentioned. A common theme is the good cheer and the love being spread by the festivities. Must be fun to tour those states in succession!
“It’s windy in Chicago. The kids are out of school
There’s magic in Motown. The city’s on the move
In Jackson, Mississippi, to Charlotte, Caroline
And all across the nation, it’s the peaceful Christmas time”
And all across the world too!
You can also feel how much these guys love Christmas with the way they sing. It’s warm and full of good cheer. That finish! This is a song that should make it on your playlists. You’ll be singing it in no time.
