How do we show our teachers we appreciate them?

Teaching is a very hectic job, with all the preparation for each lesson, creating evaluation activities, and checking papers. But more than that, a teacher ensures that each student understands the lesson. Some would even take some time off their free periods to conduct remedial classes.

They are heroes in their own way, and we barely give them any credit for that. But a small form of appreciation would already mean so much. A simple ‘thank you’ to your teacher for helping you understand the lesson that was too difficult to comprehend at first or acing the next exam to show how much you improved – this would warm any teacher’s heart.

But if we could do something grand to thank all their efforts, we would, wouldn’t we? They deserve it, and everything good. This Math teacher in Los Angeles is one of them.

A Teacher’s Heart

Julio Castro is a 31-year-old Math teacher in a Jewish private school, YULA Boys High School, in the Pico-Robertson neighborhood in Los Angeles. This teacher’s heart was always in the right place and always made sure that each student could keep up with the lessons.

“He made sure I understood all of the material by sitting down with me during his lunch breaks and sacrificing his time after school where he could be getting to the bus stop going back home,” said Joshua Gerendash spoke of his Math teacher with KABC.

A Teacher’s Struggle

As a teacher, Julio went through many struggles like any other teacher. But commuting posed another challenge in his day-to-day life.

He lives in Santa Clarita Valley and drives a scooter to the nearest bus stop, where he rides the bus to school. His commute is roughly two hours, which takes up much of his time for himself and his family.

He wakes up at 4:30 AM and comes home late at 9:30 PM, only to find his kids asleep. As a student, you’d feel guilty that your teacher has a lot of time for you yet barely for his children. So, his students thought it was time to surprise their Math teacher something that would improve his quality of life.

A Teacher’s Reward

His students took to social media a call for donations so they could surprise their beloved Math teacher. They were amazed at how people were willing to help and gathered more than enough to buy him a new car.

Julio arrived at school one day thinking it was a teacher’s appreciation program, only to be surprised with a dark blue Mazda. His girlfriend and three children witnessed this and celebrated the moment with him.

His students were able to gather enough funds to cover car insurance and a few bucks for gas. Julio was overjoyed with this surprise, knowing that he could save much of his time and even get to drop his kids to school and drive back just in time for dinner. That’s a lot of quality time he spends with his family now that he has a new car.

And we can say he deserved it so much!
