Men’s rhythmic gymnastics — ever heard of it?
It’s a sport that many people didn’t even know existed. If you’re one of those people who have never heard of it up until now, get ready for your mind to be blown.
In 2019, this men’s rhythmic gymnastics team took center stage at their Inter-High School Championships and ended up earning 1st place. It’s pretty obvious why they won… You’ll see.
“Men’s rhythmic gymnastics is one of the gymnastics competitions, which is a sport that competes with music for skills and artistic skills,” the user who uploaded the performance to YouTube wrote.
“The competition will be held at the same venue for men and women, with the first group and the fourth individual pairing with the girls, but the content is masculine, including tumbling. Men’s rhythmic gymnastics originated in Japan and are mainly performed only in Japan. (It is also done in Spain, etc. But it is the same as girls but different from Japan.)”
So if you take a look at the performance, you will see it’s a lot like regular gymnastics. There’s flips and somersaults and twists… And many other things that require extreme flexibility, balance, and endurance.
But then there is a whole new component added to it — the rhythm part. Not only are these men performing insanely difficult and complex gymnastics moves, but they are also moving in perfect sync with one another.
It’s almost like they are dancing with each other. Like synchronized swimming! But, you know, with gymnastics.
Not only does it take so much skill, practice, and talent to do these tricks… But to do them in unison with five other people is a whole different game.
And then to also add in some dancing elements in there as well! Almost 4 minutes-worth of choreography is a lot to memorize. And each move is so intricate and detailed.
They even manage to catch the crowd by surprise sometimes (caught us by surprise too!). For example, they will do a flip and we’ll think that’s the end, but then they’ll add one extra little move to the end of the flip that keeps us on our toes and catches us off guard.
Those small details play a huge part in this excellent performance. They add an extra little flare to it that helps separate it from any other gymnastics performance we’ve ever seen.
There are some moments where you can even hear the audience audibly gasp and hey, we’re right there with them! The way their bodies are able to move… It’s almost shocking at times.
We’re definitely not the only people who feel this way either. The clip of this performance has garnered almost 5 million views. Let’s just say, everyone is freaking out over this sport.
“I had no idea this sport existed. My world has been changed,” someone commented.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before…I didn’t know people could move in such perfect synchronicity. Precision moves…they must have practiced for thousands of hours,” another person wrote.
They’re not wrong — this must have taken so much practice.
“This just takes my breath away. We need men’s rhythmic gymnastics in the Olympics,” someone else added.
