If there’s one incredible fact about dogs, it is their outstanding loyalty to their masters. They are always around taking different roles that would meet the needs of their owner. They are amazing as man’s best friends, energetic and vigorous playmates, and the perfect companion for a person who needs it. And for some remarkable cases, dogs can take on the role of hero and savior, too.
Meet Heidi, a German shepherd from Australia, who made history because of her unwavering loyalty to her owner.
Cops in Moreton Bay, Australia were called one day by a fisherman who saw a dog floating in the bay area. They immediately responded and saw that there was indeed Heidi, obviously exhausted and floating aimlessly in the water.
The moment the police saw Heidi in the sea, they instantly knew that something was wrong.
The fact that a dog was too far out on the shore made the cops realize that Heidi might be with someone and that someone could probably be in danger, waiting for help in the middle of the open water.
It turned out that the cops were right, and that Heidi’s owner is actually missing.
Heidi was seen swimming next to strange objects including a tackle box, wetsuits, and some other things that led the fisherman to think that a man was fishing somewhere and something had happened to his boat.
Heidi was immediately pulled out of the water and brought to the vet clinic.
While she was taken care of in the clinic, Brisbane water police proceeded to search the area where Heid was found. They extended their coverage as they could not find anyone around the area that needed help.
At long last, after a few more hours of scoping the open waters, the cops found Heidi’s owner. The guy is a 63-year-old fellow who was holding on for dear life, his arms clutching tightly on the pole of his boat that had totally sunk into the water.
The responders quickly got him out of the water and soon, found out more about this amazing rescue story.
The old man was out fishing with Heidi on his boat when suddenly the water vehicle lost power. He checked on the issue and was surprised to find out that the boat is taking on water. Everything turned into a matter of life and death in only a few minutes.
The boat eventually sunk fully and there was nothing to hold onto but the pole. Heidi had fallen off and started to swim away. The elderly man did not know where Heidi has swum to, and he could not do anything but to hold onto the sunken boat.
Hours went by and no help has arrived. It was almost a lost cause, until finally, because of his dog’s bravery and love, the man was found by the rescuers and was saved. He was lucky to be alive after the ordeal.
When the authorities summed up the string of events that transpired, they realized how much Heidi has done to get nearer to shore. She swam for approximately 11 hours and it was an absolutely incredible feat that no one has heard of in their area. She was heroic and the police force knew she deserved to be awarded for saving her owner’s life.
The police who looked after Heidi dubbed her as an honorary police dog and she totally deserves it!
