When it comes to navigating some of the most difficult times in life, kindness is the most valuable currency there is.
People would be amazed at just how far a little compassion can stretch when they’re willing to step out and give it.
Thankfully, that’s just what this man did.
While these tough times have affected us all differently, the homeless population has taken a real hit.
Homeless shelters have been overfilled since the spread of COVID-19, making it extremely difficult to keep shelters free of the life-threatening virus.
But that has left thousands of homeless people on the streets in need of basic goods, like warm clothes.
That’s where we can all step in.
A couple from Fresno, California was out for a late-night snack when they spotted a homeless man shivering uncontrollably outside of a Mcdonald’s.
Daniel Richards, 26, and his wife hopped out of the car and started chatting with the man to see if he wanted any food.
They were prepared to give more.
They found out the homeless man’s name was David and he has only had the clothes on his back for months.
With the temperature dropping to the low 30’s that night and Daniel and his wife couldn’t bear to drive away without helping David.
Daniel’s heart turned. His body followed.
They both started walking back to the car when Daniel decided to turn around and walk back to their new pal David.
His wife made it to the car and hit record to capture a beautiful moment that could teach us all a little something about kindness.
We’ve all heard about giving the shirt off of your own back for someone but, in this case, we’re talking about something a little different.
David needed some pants.
Daniel took off his own sweatpants and gave them to David so he could stay a little warmer.
You can see in the video just how grateful this homeless man was for Daniel’s kind gesture.
The act warmed more than legs.
Daniel later explained the exchange to Inside Edition,
“I pointed to my pants and ‘if I were to give you my pants would you take them?’, and he said ‘absolutely I will take those pants’ and I mean within a split second I didn’t even hesitate and I just took off my pants“
This moment is a tear-jerker.
Most people would just drive by and carry on with their evening, but Daniel had other plans.
He knew he had plenty of pairs back at home, but David only had the shorts on his legs.
Daniel gave more than his pants.
After Daniel gave his pants to David he even gave him a hug before they parted ways.
The reporter asked Daniel what David’s reaction was and he added,
“He had this kind of deer in head lights look, like oh my gosh!”
The simple act off of lending someone a piece of warm clothing can give that person an easier night on the streets.
It’s people like Daniel and his wife that make the world a much better place.
Compassion is truly magic in our society and it goes so much farther than we might see. This kind-hearted video is exactly what we need to see during these uneasy times.
It may have started a kindness movement.
