Not all goodbyes play out the same. Some are heartbreaking. Some are bittersweet. Some are peaceful. And some are a strange mix of all of those things. This person from Milwaukee had the chance to say goodbye to his grandfather, and they did it in the most unique way.
Adam Schemm’s grandfather passed away in the hospital, but not before he asked to share a beer with his sons.
My grandfather passed away today.
Last night all he wanted to do was to have one last beer with his sons. pic.twitter.com/6FnCGtG9zW

Bittersweet is the word, but “cute” might fit in there too. He laid in his hospital bed preparing for goodbye. His loved ones were here with him, so he wasn’t terribly bothered.
He was surrounded by his sons and grandsons as they had one last beer together.
There was nothing but smiles in the photo as well. What a way to go out, huh?
Adam’s grandfather had battled stage 4 colon cancer for a while. He fought well, even though he might have never stood a chance. That’s the horrible thing about cancer.
At least he was happy when he went out! Cancer isn’t taking that away.
“You can tell they all know what’s gonna happen, and they just want to enjoy being together. They all have this look of closure.” said Adam to TODAY
He was survived by his 3 sons, grandson, and his wife of 65 years.
They promised to take good care of her. Makes you shed a tear, doesn’t it?
We’ve all said our fair share of painful goodbyes to family members. Adam’s little moment with his grandfather provided a nice, different way of saying goodbye. Of course, not everyone would be able to say a goodbye as smoothly as this.
But when the opportunity is there, it doesn’t hurt.
I cant think of many other ways I want to go out than having a beer with my boys

Adam’s tweet got a lot of attention. Almost 300,000 likes and a lot of replies.
A lot of people shared stories of loved ones going out the same way Adam’s grandfather did.
Lost my dad two years ago next week. It’s a very surreal and amazing moment to share. God Bless your family during this time of loss. pic.twitter.com/kJfz2RGi9r

I’ve got to say, it’s a trend I won’t mind seeing a bit more of. If it makes the goodbyes easier, then there’s no harm in it.
User Robert Dorsch (@RichterSupt) did the same thing with his father back in May of that year.
Did the same thing with my Dad in May. Cold beer and a Yankee game. My condolences pic.twitter.com/aNSULc7AT8

They shared a cold beer and watched a Yankee game together.
And user @brussproutsrock joined in too and shared their similar story.
Her grandma used shots of Bailey’s for her goodbye, but it was nonetheless the same idea.
It wasn’t limited to drinks either.
Rebecca Bouquot (@beccabouq) replied with her own creative and loving goodbye to her loved one. She painted their nails a pretty red. She made sure they looked nice and cute for their trip to heaven.
If you knocking on heaven’s door…do it with red nails! ❤️ Cheers to your beautiful story. It is such an honor to be present with our loved ones as they transition. pic.twitter.com/xKcCsuFdpp

Then there’s Ben Riggs, whose grandfather wished for a cigar and a beer before passing away.
Of course, Ben obliged and had a photo taken. That photo came in handy when he found this thread of numerous strangers whose loved ones did the same thing!
I don’t know you… but I felt this. Days before my grandpa passed he let my dad and I know he wanted a cigar and a beer. We made it happen. I’m so sorry for your loss. Your grandpas smile is one for the books! pic.twitter.com/HDv3y2kLeA

This grandfather wanted a hot fudge sundae before he went. His granddaughter Alexis obliged, and took a sweet photo with him to remember the moment.
If you had the chance to make your last goodbye sweeter and less heartbreaking, then wouldn’t you go for it? But goodbyes aren’t things you should plan. They just sort of…happen.
Really, what’s important is that you cherish every single moment you get to spend with those you love. You’ll never know when the time will come to say goodbye.
