Sylvia Arredondo and her mom had just come from a concert and they were hungry.
It was already 11:00 at night and there weren’t going to be a lot of open restaurants except for a few 24-hour places, like IHOP. But surprise, surprise, IHOP was closed! They were short on staff so they closed early.
Luckily, the nearby Denny’s was still open so they decided to just eat there.
When they arrived at Denny’s, they noticed that one area of the dining section was closed. The other section wasn’t full but there was a line of people, waiting to be seated.
There was a man there who told them that he hoped they weren’t in a hurry because it was going to take a while.
“There is only one waitress and one cook, my wife used to work at a Dennys so [she] jumped in and started seating people,” the man told Sylvia.
The man’s wife arrives and shows them to their table. She even asked them what drinks they wanted and brought them the drinks. Then another lady came to get their order but she doesn’t work there.

This lady told them she had no idea what she was doing but she just wanted to help.
Sylvia found out there was only one waitress and one cook working that late night shift. The waitress had been calling the manager several times but there was no answer.
For some people, especially those who are hungry like Sylvia and her mom, they will get cranky because of the expected delay.
But Sylvia, her mom, and the customers that night were different.
Instead of getting cranky, they stood up and went into the kitchen to help the staff.
“The waitress and cook look like they are college-aged students. My mom instantly became a cooks helper and I became a waitress. Another couple started busing and cleaning tables, another gentleman started washing dishes,” Sylvia described the scene.
Most of them didn’t know anything about working at a restaurant but they were determined to help the two staff members who showed up for their shift.
“All we knew was this sweet young lady and young man showed up to earn a paycheck, and we were all determined to not let them sink!” Sylvia said.

So they worked until the wee hours of the morning.
They assisted the cook with all the food preparations. They seated the people waiting in life. The orders were taken and delivered. Someone even stepped in to wash the dishes!
Orders took around one to two hours before they were served. And there were so many delivery orders coming that were enough to rattle the cook!
But they did it!
The rush died around 2:30 am and the staff has since calmed down and relaxed since their stressful shift began, thanks to the kind hearts of the customers that night.
“When the food for the last table was served, Lynn said, “Is that the last table?” The server nodded with a smile, and the entire restaurant broke out in applause and cheers! Her smile lit up the room and the cook walked to the doorway with a huge grin, too! How awesome to see someone’s night turn around!” Lynn Roberts, one of the “servers” that night, shared.
