Fortunately, most of us don’t experience what some parents do. Moms and dads who have kids with health problems spend a lot of time at the hospital. That alone is hard. But then to watch a child go through one checkup, treatment, procedure, or surgery after another, things become stressful.
You also need to look at this situation from a child’s perspective. Instead of outside playing with friends, they’re stuck at the hospital, time after time. I can only imagine the toll that would take…physically and emotionally. But one young girl makes her visits to the hospital not just tolerable but also enjoyable.
Evie Hurst isn’t just any ordinary girl.
Because she suffers from chronic medical problems, she’s at the hospital a lot. Even more disheartening, she’s terrified of doctors. Although she understands the medical personnel is there to help her feel better, it’s still a traumatic experience. But there’s another reason she’s so afraid.
She’s a beautiful and brave young lady.
Evie’s parents adopted her from China when she was four years old. But before she even went home with them, she’d already developed a severe case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. That combined with a condition called anophthalmia, meaning she was wasn’t born with any eyes, hospital visits take her into the unknown…something she’s uncomfortable with.
Her early years were rough.
Remember, Evie was four when she was adopted yet she weighed a mere 11 pounds. Completely malnourished, her parents had to help her to start thriving. Then, she had to make a lot of adjustments once she arrived in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Blind, her new world didn’t feel very safe.
Using music to communicate.
Another issue was that Evie didn’t speak hardly at all. So, her mom and dad would sing to her as a way to communicate and bond. It didn’t take long to realize this calmed her down tremendously. When taking her to her hospital visits, music therapy turned out to be a lifesaver.
Music works like a miracle for Evie.
As her mother explained, on one visit, their daughter needed to have a brain scan done. But before even going to radiology, she began to panic. That’s when the mom had the music therapist brought into the room.
Tears turned to smiles.
In a video that’s now gone viral, viewers see Evie having a breakdown with tears flowing down her tiny face. She’s trying so hard to be brave yet she’s scared. While mom keeps her calm somewhat, it’s only when Emma Wymer, the music therapist begins to sing that you see a huge transformation. The song — Alessia Cara’s “Scars to Your Beautiful.”
The parents received a lot of support.
In a viral video, viewers see Evie having a breakdown with tears flowing down Evie’s entire body relaxes and then to the music of the guitar, she starts to sing along with Emma. This precious girl has a beautiful voice. For the parents, the flood of support provided by complete strangers had made dealing with trips to the hospital far less stressful than before. Especially since they have another daughter adopted from China with the same condition.
While there’s no telling where Evie’s future will take her, she has her parents, siblings, and music therapy with her all the way. And with her voice, who knows, she might become a music therapist herself one day. What a sweet little girl.
