Swooping in to save the day and rescuing someone in distress can feel euphoric. Or it can comically backfire and leave the hero feeling like an epic failure with footage that has the internet cracking up.

Theresa Wigley of Texas spied an energetic squirrel flailing about in her grandchildren’s inflatable kiddie pool. Her heart fluttered when she realized he was drowning and could die right before her very eyes.

She screams for her daughter Tara to come help. She couldn’t just let it perish without them trying to rescue it.

“I called my daughter outside to see a squirrel trapped in my granddaughter’s kiddie pool. And of course, being the animal lover she is, she had to attempt a rescue.”

Except for Twiggy the water-skiing squirrel, squirrels prefer not to swim even though they can if they absolutely have to. In fact, they use their tails to help steer while doggie paddling.

Tara hustles to the backyard, freaking out a bit about the frantic squirrel. The fiesty little stinker scurries all around the rectangular-shaped pool.

Her mom Theresa captured the wild goose chase on camera where it quickly went viral. Even Tara couldn’t help but laugh at herself when the escapade was all said and done.

“Attempted to rescue a squirrel; he wasn’t quite as grateful as I had hoped…”

Theresa warns Tara not to touch the squirrel. Does she listen? Nope LOL.

Everything quickly goes downhill from there. Tara pushes ahead with Operation Save the Squirrel and wasn’t about to leave this squirrel behind.

She searches around for something with which she could grab the squirrel other than her bare hands. She entered panic mode at this point.

“I need gloves!”

None were just lying around in the backyard, so her mom shouts out advice. In the heat of the moment, Tara punted.

“Get a board!”

So Tara scans the area and latches onto a bright yellow chair that she hoped the squirrel would hop onto so she could lift him up out of the water.

Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong.

Because the wild and crazy squirrel has other plans. It’s likely feeling very panicky right now and it shows, poor thing!

Tara plunges into the pool clutching the chair and chases the squirrel around. The squirrel, however, spends his time fleeing from the deranged human.

“I’m saving you! I’m saving you!”

Apparently, the squirrel didn’t get Tara’s memo, because he engages in a hilarious game of tag. Tara’s panic accelerates as the squirrel refuses to cooperate.

“Let me save you!”

After begging and pleading with the squirrel to allow her to rescue him, the squirrel leaps onto the chair. Finally, Tara could claim she rescued the squirrel.

Except the squirrel went legit nutty. Instead of hopping off the chair onto dry land, the squirrel goes bonkers and throws itself right at Tara!

The expression on her face and her reaction are priceless! The squirrel sprints up the chair and right at her face!

She shrieks a deafening sound sure to break glass and chucks the chair. Tara leaps out of the pool to save herself and the squirrel ends up right back where he started – in the darn pool!

Eventually, the squirrel survives Tara’s undeterred yet hair-raising attempts to rescue it and allows her to save its life. Tara survived with only a scratch on her arm.

This video is absolutely hysterical! You’ll want to watch it over and over again.
