Officer goes above and beyond to help family after girl shoplifts shoes
He could’ve just dropped the 12-year-old thief off and been done with the situation. But instead, the officer returned a short time later with his hands full.

Officer Che Milton comes from a law enforcement family, so it was only natural that he would follow his relatives’ path and join the police.

Indeed, a few years ago, once he finished training, he started his job as a police officer with the Atlanta Police Department.

Within a week, not only did he prove that he was there to enforce the law, but that he was willing to go the extra mile for his fellow citizens in order to serve the community as best as he could.

You see, only four days on the job, he received a 911 call about someone trying to shoplift a pair of shoes from the local dollar store.

Officer Milton drove to the store right away only to see a 12-year-old girl, who was crying her eyes out.

The officer asked the girl how old she was and why she was trying to steal those shoes.

When she told him that she wanted to get a pair of shoes for her 5-year-old sister but she couldn’t afford them, he felt sorry for her.

Especially, knowing that the pair of shoes in question cost no more than $2.

The man felt sympathy for the little girl and he decided to drive her back home to check up on the living conditions of her family.

The girl lived in a rough neighborhood, in an old and weary-looking house.

When the officer entered, he saw the girl’s mother holding one baby in her arms, while trying to tidy up, while at the same time other children were around playing.

The house didn’t have much furniture except for a sofa in the living room and some beds, which were not even enough to accommodate everyone.

As the girl’s mother explained, she and her husband had five children, ages from newborn to 12, and she couldn’t work because she couldn’t afford daycare for the younger ones.

Although the father worked in and out of town, he still didn’t make enough money for them to buy some more- and much-needed- furniture, clothes, and even food.

Milton left the house but not for long.

Later that day, he returned with four pizzas and two beverages for the struggling family. The mother of five couldn’t thank him enough.

The officer also contacted DFACS to figure out if a social worker could work on this family’s case and help them with their living conditions.

The mother couldn’t be more grateful to the officer. Not only did he not arrest her almost teenage daughter who was caught stealing, but he also was so sympathetic towards her family and went above and beyond to help them.

After the story got out – tons of donations for the family came in and the officers dropped them off at their house.

Besides bringing over much-needed items, Milton has also stopped by to check up on the family – all out of the goodness of his heart.

No wonder Milton was Officer of the Month then.

All thanks to his dedication and willingness to help the community in any way he could.

The Atlanta Police Department was proud, telling CNN:

“The way that Officer Milton handled this incident showed that not only is he here to enforce the law but also to go the extra mile and be a bigger part of the community he is policing.”
