In these times of uncertainty and insecurity due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, people seem to take one of two ways: they either become selfish and go by the motto “it’s every man for himself”, or they feel the need to offer to the community now more than ever.

Especially with the information that we get from the authorities that this virus can prove deadly for elderly citizens, the latter have already started panicking and feel more vulnerable than ever. Thankfully, however, there are still people out there willing to help them and run some errands for them so that they can stay safe at home.

One of the latest examples of this “good Samaritan” mentality, is a young girl from Gilbert, Arizona. A couple of days ago, the official news source of Gilbert posted on Twitter the girl’s good deed.

The post consisted of a photo and a short text that was explaining the situation. The story went like this: an elderly couple went to Trader Joe’s the other day to do their shopping. However, they were so scared of being close to other people- don’t forget, the main way of transmitting this virus is by close contact with carriers- that they had tears in their eyes.

“I just witnessed this behind me at Trader Joe’s,” the anonymous bystander wrote. “An elderly couple who had tears in their eyes because they were so afraid to be at the store.”

Luckily for them, a girl that happened to be shopping around saw them and noticed how anxious and frightened they both were. So, she decided that her shopping could wait- she had to do something for this couple first. The girl approached them and gave them her phone number, offering to do their shopping for them. But that was not all; she didn’t just mean that day’s shopping from Trader Joe’s- she clarified that she was willing to do all the shopping they would need from then on!

The bystander that witnessed the scene was so moved by the girl’s action that she had to share it on social media, and that’s how the story made it to the official Gilbert’s Twitter account.

People who read the post cried tears of happiness as they realized that there are still good, selfless people out there who would go above and beyond for the most vulnerable members of their community. The post went viral and it was soon reposted by other local news sources. People loved the girl’s example and some even offered to do the same.

“Bless her heart what a wonderful young girl she is may god bless her,” someone commented on Facebook, while someone else wrote: “This is my sisters fb page below, she does house cleaning and she is offering as well to help any elders out.”

Congratulations to the young girl who offered to help this couple. We’re sure there are more people like her out there who help others in need during these uncertain times.
