When you hear the term kidnapping, the face of an innocent child usually comes to mind. But adults can be kidnapped too— something the following two teens learned firsthand.

Back in 2013, Aaron Arias, 19, and Jamal Harris, 17, were on their way to Seagoville, Texas, to pick up a mutual friend.

While they were driving, a woman in the car next to them caught their eye.

In an interview with NBC DFW, Arias described the scene: “Were checking out the girl in the backseat because, we’re like, ‘OK, she’s kind of attractive.’ And then, all of the sudden, you know, the guy turned back looking at us.”

When the teens got a closer look at the woman in the back seat, they saw she was mouthing the words: ‘Help me’.

“We made eye contact,” Harris recalled. “And I see the serious expression on her face.”

“What she was trying to say was serious.”

“And I read her lips and she was like, ‘Help me.'”

“They drive right in front of us and I see her touch the back windshield, and I saw her face and that’s when I knew we had to go after them,” Arias added.

The teens called the police and trailed the vehicle for 20 minutes until help could arrive.

“He was driving crazy, swerving and everything,” recalled Arias. “At one point, he started turning on and off his lights, so we knew that he knew he was being followed.”

Charles Atkins Lewis Jr., 37, was charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated robbery. When police arrested him, there was a knife and handgun in the car.

Lewis did not know the victim prior to the incident. According to Dallas News, she had been leaving a downtown young professionals networking party at around 11 PM when the man approached her from behind.

He proceeded to hit her three times (with what she believes was a handgun) before forcing her into the vehicle and tossing her cell phone out the window.

The woman believed Lewis was “going to rape her and possibly kill her,” a police officer wrote in the affidavit.

After the incident, the teens were credited with saving the woman’s life.

Despite all the praise, however, the two remain humble: “She says we saved her life. I guess you could say we did,” Arias admitted. “But I don’t want to be that person that says they’re a hero.”

When the woman was freed from the car, she hugged the boys and thanked them for their help. “I would describe it as the best hug I’ve ever gotten,” Arias said. “The hugs, the tears, like, she was crying because she was beyond grateful.”

“You don’t need a cape to be a hero,” he said.

“You just have to be yourself and just respond.”
