We have witnessed a lot of parents who would go to lengths for their children.
But in this story, a daughter makes a sacrifice for her father.
Meet Katie Eitner from Waynesburg, Pennsylvania.
The 13-year-old girl had a full-time job where she wrote thank-you notes.
However, she still wanted to help pay her stepfather’s medical bills.
So she decided to sell her lamb at a 4-H auction.
4-H is one of the youth organizations in the United States that emphasizes the importance of animal care, farming, and healthy living.
The organization was founded in 1902, and the smart activities have been passed on to generations for years.
Most participants are rural children, allowing them to learn new skills and do community service.
Katie hoped to raise money to help her dad with a brain tumor.
She knew that whatever came out of her initiative would not be enough to cover the expenses.
However, Katie still wanted to do it despite knowing that the lamb might not be much.
The price sales were a bit low during the evening of the auction – that is, until it was her turn.
After stepping into the ring, Katie and her family could not believe what happened next!
The auction started at $20 per pound for the 145-pound lamb.
“I started the sale at $20, so it was a lot to take in out there by myself for a little,” Katie said.
From there, you could already feel the chills as the prices went high.
20, 30, 50, 100, 200…the price skyrocketed as the crowd cheered.
The numbers went up and up until it reached $233 a pound.
Her fellow 4-H members joined in the ring to cheer for Katie.
Heather Gapen, Katie’s mom, was in tears after everything that happened, and she was very much thankful to the whole community for all the support they had received.
As it turned out, the organizers planned and spread the word about her family’s situation.
4-H members, neighbors, and local business owners went to the auction after hearing about it.
Rogen VanDruff of VanDruff Tractor and Implement Sales was the man behind it.
VanDruff and Gapen have known each other, and their ties go way back to the old times, so doing this act is more like helping a friend rather than charity.
The lamb was sold at a whopping $33,785!
The Gapen family received the amount through a cheque.
Aside from the amount raised during the auction, Gapen said they also helped settle the medical bills.
After paying all the bills, the extra money will be used for Kate’s education.
VanDruff was amazed by how the 4-H members and the Greene County community helped to achieve their goals.
Not just a community or organization but a family.
“I didn’t do this for me. I did this for them,” VanDruff said. “I’m just simply thankful the community got involved.”
Heather and her family continued receiving calls and money donations from various people.
“I just can’t believe how great people can be,” Heather said.
