February 17 was Random Act of Kindness Day, but for some people, it seems that it is celebrated every day.
Last Thursday, just as Dave Kuban and Carlos Gonzales were preparing to start the day at their Hometown Deli in Norwalk, they saw something that was definitely out of the ordinary.
A garbage man pulled over the garbage truck and hopped off to help a woman who looked really sad. They saw him approach her and give her a tight hug.
“We just saw him hugging her for, I don’t know, I want to say five minutes if that. But it was a real hug,” Gonzales told News 12.
The two work partners had no idea what was going on, but they felt that the man had just done something amazing for a fellow citizen.
Because this is not something you see every day, Kuban decided to take a photo of the moment and give a shout-out to the garbage man for being so kind and generous.
“That’s just Dave being Dave. He sees something nice, and he just wants to show appreciation,” Gonzales said.
So, Dave posted the photos to social media and asked Facebook users if they had any idea who that man was. He wanted to say “thank you” for his act of kindness by offering him a free lunch.
“We wanted to show him we appreciate him doing something like that. We need that in the world today.”
Indeed, the word spread fast, and Facebook users tracked down the man in the photos. It is Mike Nance, a young employee at WIN Waste Innovations, who just wants to see the good in people and he always tries to help anyone who needs it.
That day, it was a woman, who was standing on the side of the street and looked really sad. Nance knew that she could use some help and, as he always does, he offered to help her.
“Anytime you see somebody walking around with everything that they own, talking to themselves—I don’t know. It just took over me,” Nance explained.
As the man explained, the woman needed some cash, so he helped her with that. But besides that, he felt that she needed more. She was desperate for some human connection, so he hugged her.
Mike didn’t stop there. He also prayed for her, hoping that this would make her feel better.
The man said that he is from Norwalk and he feels compelled to do whatever he can in order to help his community members.
Still, a free lunch from one of the city’s best deli places is always welcome.
Hometown Deli also tracked down the woman that Nance hugged the other day, and they offered her a free breakfast, too.
This was really amazing, and a reminder that good deeds can create a domino effect.
