Titles and job descriptions mean nothing when a life is at risk. In the story of the Good Samaritan, the titles of what people were expected to do and who actually did it was the whole point of the story! In one story, we see what happens when good people decide to do something. In this case, it likely saved two lives.

By the time firemen get calls, the building is usually already engulfed. In this case, it was no different. The Ceres Fire Department (CFD) received a call and suited up to go put out a fire at a residential home. The man in charge, Ceres Fire Chief Kevin Wise, explained to FOX40:

“By the time we got there, which was a very fast response, there was heavy fire in the residence through the front and the back.”

When the team got there, they immediately started looking for anyone in the home.

Incredibly, there was nobody inside, even though the home was owned by an elderly couple who normally would have been home during the time of the fire. After the fire department realized what had happened, however, they knew it wasn’t just chance.

Miraculously, a garbage man had seen the fire and decided to go over to the home and help.

The man, Patrick Lebow, was collecting the street’s garbage when he saw that the home was burning. When he realized that there were two elderly people within, he did the miraculous. Kicking the door down, he ran in to save them.

The story was recounted to the Fire Chief, who then reported it back during an interview.

“He found a gentleman that was inside that looked possibly a little dazed and confused. He helped that gentlemen out of the house,” explained Wise. “And then he knew that there was somebody else in the house. So we went back looking again for his wife and he located the wife in the backyard and helped her out of the house also.” – FOX40

The heroics on Lebow’s part likely saved the elderly couple from being trapped within the building as the fire raged. The couple’s pets tragically lost their lives in the home, showing just how dangerous things really were.

When asked to be a part of an on-camera interview, Lebow declined, stating that it was something anyone would have done.

Not just a hero, but someone who didn’t even care for the spotlight! It’s not every day that you run into people like that. For the couple who was saved, it likely didn’t feel as trivial as Lebow made it sound! This is such a wonderful reminder to never judge someone based on their job title.

“Who knows what might have happened if it wasn’t for his actions and taking it upon himself to do something about it. The results could have been devastating,” said Wise.
