Anyone who has ever been arrested will surely tell you how scary and intimidating it can be; it is something no one wants to experience.
Many people make it through their whole lives without having any interaction with the judicial system at all.
This was the case for Delores Sheinis, at least until she was 80 years old.
The grandmother had lived a good law-abiding life and it wasn’t until an incident with her ex-husband that the woman had to go through the court system.
After getting into an argument with her ex about living arrangements, the man called the police on the elderly woman.
Delores was not happy with the situation and was not willing to comply with the police.
They ended up arresting her on the charge of ‘Resisting Arrest’.
Delores spent the rest of her day in jail before being able to go to the courthouse and see the judge the next morning.
The woman seemed to take things in stride though, as she managed to charm the judge with her quick wit.
The Honorable Judge John Hurley listened to Delores’s story and realized that the woman did not belong in jail.
He decided to give her a second chance and decreed that she should be released on her own recognizance.
He gave her a 500-foot restraining order to keep her away from her ex-husband.
Judge Hurley made it abundantly clear that this was the only second chance the woman would get, she needed to stay away from him.
“I swear on all that is holy and a stack of Bibles, I will never go near him, call him, talk to him, or even look at him.”
The Judge asked her what it was she swore on first as he didn’t quite hear her.
Delores couldn’t remember and when the public defender told the Judge that it had been “all that’s holy”, he relayed that to Delores.
The woman apologized and said that she couldn’t understand his twang.
This comment took the Judge a little off guard, but he chuckled at it and asked the woman if she ever thought of doing a stand-up routine.
“If you pay me good money sweetheart, I’ll be there.” Delores sassily responded.
This had both the Judge and the other prisoners who were waiting for their turn to speak to him, laughing.
The Judge then said that he had never been called ‘sweetheart’ in his courtroom, and Delores’s quick response had the whole room laughing.
“Does that mean you’re taking me for breakfast?” The Judge blushed a little before asking her one last question.
“Let me ask you something, ma’am,” he said, “How have I done as a Judge today? So far, how am I doing?”
True to her sassy character, Delores was quick with her reply…
“Not bad,” she said, “but you could do better.”
After everything was said and done, and the Judge was ready to dismiss Delores and get on with the next case, they had one last hilarious exchange.
“I’ve got to tell you, you brightened my day ma’am.”
“That’s what the last guy said,” Delores quickly replied, “and then he sued me.”
Her final words to the court had everybody laughing and proved that, with a good attitude, even on the worst days of our lives, there is always something to laugh and smile about.
What a hoot she is!
The footage made it to A&E’s show “Court Cam,” and it’s been quickly racking up views.
