No one plans their day thinking that they might have to save a life. But the heroes among us are those that step up to the plate and do what needs to be done when the situation calls for it. That’s what happened in Muskegon Heights, Michigan when a teacher saves the day.
The Global Pandemic makes it hard for everyone especially our students…
The Global Pandemic has forced families and teachers to work together in unprecedented ways. From distant learning over Zoom calls to teachers using online chat rooms for lessons, everyone is doing their best for tomorrow’s leaders.
But during what started off as a routine tech call for a learning program, one teacher stumbled upon a heart-stopping scene.
What started out as a tech support call became something more serious
First-grade teacher, Julia Koch received word about a glitch from one of her students. Apparently, this student’s computer wasn’t charging up, which meant she couldn’t participate in lessons. So Koch contacted Cynthia Phillips. the student’s grandmother, hoping to help. But it didn’t take long for Koch to realize that this was no ordinary call.
Julia Koch was interviewed by CNN about the situation and she had this to say:
“It was clear there was something very wrong. Her words were so jumbled, and I couldn’t understand what she was trying to say, She didn’t sound like herself.”
She wasted no time in finding help for Ms. Phillips by…
Koch leapt into action and contacted the school principal Charlie Lovelady. She told Lovelady about the signs of distress and begged the principal to call 911. So Lovelady called Ms. Phillips while their staff contacted the emergency personnel.
As it turns out, Lovelady recognized the signs of stroke since they had lost their father to stroke symptoms some time before. While Lovelady’s staff organized with medical personnel they remained on the phone with Phillips to keep them company until help arrived.
Quick Thinking led to a Quick Rescue
While rescuers were on the way, Lovelady even contacted workers to go to Phillips’ house to check up on her in person. Lovelady knew that Phillips had children in the house with her and didn’t want them to panic if anything went wrong.
Thankfully, rescuers arrived on the scene in record time.
They picked up Phillips and carried her to the hospital for care and treatment.
Phillips is alive and well thanks to her…
Thanks to Koch’s quick action, Phillips was able to survive the stroke conditions. She was reflected on how close she was to death and had nothing but praise for her in real life guardian angels.
“If it wasn’t for them getting me the help, I needed I would’ve just not been here.”
It’s a Big-Hearted job for Big-Hearted people
Koch had reflected on the incident as well and realizes that it shows how much care and love goes into becoming an educator. As she said:
“I don’t think one can truly be a good teacher and not care about the students and their families. In the environment we’re in especially, it’s too hard to do this without actually truly caring,”
What We Can Take Away From this
The Global Pandemic is a trying time across the world. But it’s so heartwarming to see that brave and caring individuals like Koch and Lovelady are doing their part to make life better.
