Things have been extremely rough for the Thompson family lately. At the beginning of August, the little 2-year-old Phoenix was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. The disease needs to be treated instantly, and very aggressive chemotherapy was scheduled.
To make things worse, the sweet girl also suffers from MDS, which involves a number of dangerous blood conditions because the bone marrow doesn’t function properly.
Despite the dire circumstances, Phoenix hasn’t lost her smile and is determined to keep on fighting.
The blood cancer is extremely aggressive, and even large amounts of chemotherapy treatments aren’t a guaranteed success. According to doctors, induced remissions only occur in about 20 to 45% of the cases, meaning that Phoenix likely still has a very long and tough battle ahead of her.
After the first round of chemotherapy, doctors will determine what the best course of action will be. Either Phoenix will receive more chemotherapy after the ‘induction of remission’ phase, or she will receive a bone marrow transplant.
The treatments have been very tough for Phoenix, and her dad decided to cheer her up with a heartwarming surprise.
Daddy Brett Thompson wanted to give his daughter a special moment both of them would never forget. The man dressed up in his best suit and made sure that Phoenix could wear a beautiful princess outfit as well. Stepmom Christina filmed everything with her smartphone.
In her hospital room – filled with all kinds of fluffy friends and cuddly bears – dad invited his daughter to have a lovely daddy-daughter dance together. Playing on the background was Tim McGraw’s song “My Little Girl.” He couldn’t have picked a better song.
The video is absolutely heartwarming and the constant smile on Phoenix’ face says more than a thousand words. This daddy-daughter dance is a beautiful moment that the entire family will cherish forever.
The family is doing everything they can to support Phoenix, but it hasn’t been easy.
“Brett and Christina not only have Phoenix to care for full time, but they also have 4 other children,” their GoFundMe page reads. During this time, Brett will be taking off of work to care for the other children and drive back and forth to be with Christina and Phoenix.”
“The proceeds will also be helping Phoenix’s biological mother Whitney. She has been coming to and from the hospital, working and keeping up with many other things. We are so thankful to have a functional family and to be there for each other through this.”
Christina posted the video of this adorable daddy-daughter dance online, which quickly went viral. It was also picked up by a couple of local news stations.
The community in their hometown in Georgia is holding a benefit to help with all of the medical costs, and a friend created a GoFundMe page for the family where more than $22,000 has been raised in a couple of days.
In a small update, a friend of the family said that Phoenix is doing great. Of course, she’s starting to lose energy and is often fatigued due to the treatments, but everything is going as planned.
Let’s hope that this sweet and strong girl has a speedy recovery!
