Fast food jobs simply require you to know how to flip burgers, operate the stoves and be nice to the customers even if they’re not so nice to you. However, some other skills might be useful too even if you don’t put them on your resume.
Like fixing a broken ice cream machine, doing math without a calculator, and I guess saving someone’s life too if the situation calls for it.
Now, while the first two of those skills will definitely be handy on a normal occasion (and they might land you a raise too!), the last one isn’t quite a skill you’d be absolutely prepared for at any given time.
It’s not like people regularly walk into fast food restaurants with stab wounds and concussions. This is a restaurant, not an emergency room.
But sometimes, people can get incredibly unlucky and fall into danger when there isn’t a hospital or help nearby. What are you supposed to do when this happens?
This was the situation Pedro Viloria found himself in back in 2017. At just 22 years old, he’s your typical working class young person looking for any income he can earn.
Working the night shift at the drive-thru at this McDonald’s branch, Pedro might have needed the job to pay for college or get the experience.
On the particular night that put Pedro’s name on the news, a woman pulling up to the drive-thru had her kids in the back of the car with her. Although something immediately seemed off. The car wasn’t slowing down, and there was screaming coming from her kids.
He didn’t need a bachelor’s degree or extra work experience to realize that something was wrong.
Without wasting a second, our working-class hero leaped out the drive-thru window and sprinted towards the car. Just a few seconds before, he could hear the kids screaming “Mother! Mother! Stop it, mother – what are you doing?!”
“In that moment, I thought, ‘I’d rather save that woman’s life”
The McDonald’s CCTV footage shows the very moment Pedro channeled his inner superhero and leaped out the window, like Spider-Man springing into action to chase the Sinister Six. An appropriate comparison since Peter Parker is a working-class superhero himself.
For whatever reason, the woman lost consciousness behind the wheel. Now the car was rolling free with children in the back, and the only one who knew what was happening was Pedro.
“I thought, if these kids lose their mother today, that’s gonna be tragic. If I would have needed to die to save that woman, I would have done it.”
From inside the restaurant, some other people caught sight of the car too. Though Pedro was already making a beeline for the car by the time they noticed. Nonetheless, the people inside sprang to inspect the scene and lend help if need be.
As luck would have it, the people inside the restaurant were public service workers. Specifically, two firefighters on break and an off-duty paramedic. Talk about being in the right place at the right time!
Pedro managed to alert them to what happened to the woman. Turns out she was an off-duty officer picking up breakfast for her and her kids. One of the people at the scene managed to perform CPR on her before she was brought to the hospital.
It’s scary to think what might’ve happened to the mother of these kids had Pedro not seen and acted at the right time. Pedro’s presence and heroic instinct shifted the odds, and it’s thanks to him that their mother is safe.
