Josh Groban is an incredible artist, best known for his amazing voice and the way he interacts with his fans. The prolific singer, songwriter, actor, and producer’s first four albums were certified multi-platinum.
Although Groban is a global megastar, he doesn’t let himself forget where all his fame came from – his fans. He often makes a point of picking someone out of the crowd to give them their 15 minutes of fame.
But this time, it was a bit different.
In one of Josh Groban’s live shows in 2011, he made a teenage girl’s dreams come true when he chose her to stand up and sing a duet with him.
If you’ve ever seen Groban performing live, you’ll know that he is quite chatty and down-to-earth when he engages with his fans.
Groban asks the teen a few questions to break the ice – how old is she? Where does she live?
The lucky girl’s native language is French, so it’s a bit difficult for Groban to talk to her. Still, he’s not dissuaded and presses on. You can see that she’s nervous now that the spotlight’s on her and she’s speaking to her idol.
But Groban smiles reassuringly at her until she reveals that she wants to sing “To Where You Are.”
After a few more minutes of banter, it’s time to sing. Groban golds the mic in front of the ecstatic fan. She takes a deep breath.
But when she opens her mouth and the first note comes out, everyone knows that this is going to be something special.
It turns out that Groban’s singing partner was 17-year-old Maude Daigneault, a singer from Québec, Canada. It had been her lifelong dream to perform with Groban.
And now, it was her chance to shine!
Maude’s clear, pitch-perfect voice washes over the stadium – it’s clear that she’s got a natural gift.
The crowd is in awe as Maude delivers the first refrain of Groban’s song. Groban himself is shaking his head slightly in disbelief, but positively beaming at her.
The crowd is hanging onto Maud’s every word. When she finishes her solo, they wildly erupt into applause.
But the duet isn’t over yet.
Josh Groban joins in and his deep velvety voice blends perfectly into Maud’s. The two different vocals – a tenor and a soprano – complement each other perfectly.
He savors the spotlight for a little while before handing the mic back over to his talented fan.
Maude begins to serenade the crowd once more and the audience goes absolutely wild. For the rest of the unforgettable duet, Groban and Maude pass the mic back and forth, taking turns to sing the beautiful song. Then, it’s time for the grand finale.
Groban and Maude sing together in perfect harmony – and their performance is completely mesmerizing.
The incredible performance was uploaded onto YouTube in 2013 after a fan at the show cut all the best angles together. Now, it has more than 7 million views.
Maud’s time in the spotlight with her idol has inspired her to follow her dreams of becoming a singer, but that’s not the last she saw of him… just a few months later, she met Groban again for a one-on-one!
