80-year-old Tom Keating moved into Moss View care home in the UK in 2016; he needed extra care and support. It wasn’t long, though, before he had a roommate — his 98-year-old mom.

Tom and his mom, Ada, have always been inseparable; Tom never married and had always lived with his mother. So, when Tom required a bit of extra attention and care, it was an easy choice for Ada to come along with him.

It was a year that Tom spent at Moss View before Ada ended up joining him, but now that they’re back together, they both couldn’t be happier. In fact, Ada’s granddaughter, Debi Highman, finds peace in her heart that they’re together.

“There’s no parting them!” Debi said. “It’s reassuring for us that they’re both getting looked after 24/7.”

Before retiring, Tom was a painter and Ada had been an auxiliary nurse at Mill Road Hospital.

Now that the mother and son have been reunited, they have already established a routine at the care home.

“I say goodnight to Tom in his room every night and I’ll go and say good morning to him. I’ll tell him I’m coming down for breakfast. When I go out to the hairdressers he’ll look for me to see when I’m coming back. When I get back he’ll come to me with his arms outstretched and give me a big hug,” Ada says about her and her son’s relationship. “You never stop being a mum!”

Not only does Tom have the care facility to help look after him and his health, but he also has his mom to give him extra compassion and affection.

“They’re very good here and I’m happy to see my mum more now she lives here,” Tom says. “She’s very good at looking after me. Sometimes she’ll say ‘Behave yourself!’”

Ada and her husband Harry had four children — Tom, Barbra, and Margi. Tom also had a sister Janet who passed at the age of 13. Harry has also since passed away. The rest of the family, however, loves coming to visit Tom and Ada.

The caregivers at the home were moved by the closeness of Ada and Tom’s relationship.

“It’s very touching to see the close relationship both Tom and Ada share and we are so pleased we were able to accommodate both of their needs,” caregiver Philip Daniels said. “It’s very rare to see mothers and their children together in the same care home and we certainly want to make their time together as special as possible. They are inseparable.”
