Not everyone in the world is kind. That’s a hard and unfortunate reality that we come to terms with occasionally. For one man, he was reminded that people can be bad, but also generous. It all happened when his lawnmower was stolen.
Gordon Blakeslee had his lawnmower stolen right out of his front lawn.
His red 2009 Craftsman riding lawn mower was precious to him. He loves cutting the grass and it’s been part of his routine for years – he is 85 years old! When covid hit, he went to live with his kids and he wasn’t able to cut the grass for quite a while.
When he finally went back, his lawnmower had been stolen.
“That was something that was precious to him, everything that he has, has value to him,” said Candace Blakeslee, Gordon’s daughter-in-law. “If it’s not broken, it doesn’t need to be repaired or replaced.” – WBNG
It was dear to him and someone had just taken it right off his property! Taking some cardboard and writing a sign, he explained that he needed his lawnmower and was too old to use a push one. It was a little sad for anyone to see as they drove past!
It clearly meant a lot to him and hoped that someone would find it in their hearts to return his mower to him.
“I didn’t realize how much he would miss it until I came here and saw the sign,” said Candace. “It melted my heart.”
At the end of the WBNG 12 News video, that’s where the story ends. As we find out, however, it wasn’t going to stay that way for long. An anonymous individual had heard about Gordon’s predicament and decided to help.
After the news shared the story, someone had heard it and knew Gordon needed some help.
Incredibly, a brand new red Craftsman was sent to the Broome County Sheriffs Office and taken right to Gordon. Someone had bought him a new riding mower!
“I couldn’t be any more thankful. With everything going on, I know he’s happier than happy to have a mower back,” said Garrett Blakeslee, Gordon’s grandson. – WBNG
Even more, the donation was totally anonymous.
Gordon was shocked by the stranger’s generosity.
“Thank you, what else can I say, I really appreciate it,” said Gordon. “It’s got some new upgrades to it, that’s a lot better than my old one.”
Jumping into a brand new mower after using a 2009 model for that long definitely was an upgrade for him! Heading out, he was able to do what he loved to much – cut the grass just like he liked to do.
“It gets me out, get some fresh air, gets me some exercise. That’s the main thing. Sit [inside], and you don’t last long,” said Gordon.
Despite the reminder that there were bad people out there, this was an even better reminder – there are good people too.
