EMTs do a lot for us. They are the front line of emergency medicine. They are there when we need them most and might not exactly be at our best. They save lives and get critical patients to the hospital as quickly as possible. And they are always up for the challenge.
However, sometimes they do more than just help us in a crisis. This is a time when they went above and beyond for one of their patients.
A story worth retelling
Howard Storelee doesn’t let his age stop him from keeping up his home. The 88-year-old was outside, mowing his impeccable lawn when he fell and broke his hip.
Unfortunately, it was in a hidden part of the yard and it was several hours before three middle school students walked by and finally heard his cries for help. They immediately called 911.
A small group of emergency responders from the West Thurston Regional Fire Authority were the ones who responded to the emergency call placed by the students and brought Richard to the hospital.
An idea is formed
After the three responders had left the elderly man in the safe care of hospital workers, they returned to work and finished their shift. However, they weren’t quite done for the day. There was something else they wanted to do for their patient. They discussed the idea with their lieutenant and captain. Everyone supported them and encouraged them to go through with their plan.
And an act of kindness
They knew that Howard was going to be in the hospital for a while to recover. So, after their shift was over, the three of them went back to his house and finished mowing the lawn and doing the yard work that the elderly man had been working on when he fell.
His grandson, @AidenMartin15 shared on Twitter:
“My granddad fell this morning while mowing the lawn and broke his hip. The EMT’s that took him to the hospital came back and finished his job for him.”
The emergency responders had wanted Howard to return home to a finished lawn.
One of the EMT’s, Alexander Trautman, put it this way:
“We knew he’d be down for a while. We figured the least we could do was go back and help out.”
We don’t often think of mowing the lawn as an act of heroism, but in the case of these EMTs, it showed a level of kindness that is hard to surpass.
A positive response
Everyone who first saw the grandson’s post on Twitter responded with positivity. They were touched by the thoughtfulness behind such a simple act.
@LuluLacrima responded with:
“Your granddad is amazing for keeping up such a lovely yard, and those EMTs are amazing for being such good ‘neighbors.’ I wish your granddad a full and swift recovery. p.s. I think you’re an amazing grandson b/c you’re just oozing love & gratitude.”
Others chimed in with similar sentiments.

“Great story. Thank goodness for three middle school students. You brought tears to my eyes. And the First Responders that came back and finished mowing his lawn. Best news of the day! Glad your Granddad is safe.”
We have to agree with them. It would be hard not to.
