An elderly woman in Virginia loved her two 16-year-old Birman cats more than anything. She’d had them since they were kittens and took wonderful care of them. But unfortunately, the woman’s health took a turn and she had to enter a nursing home.

To make matters worse, she was told she couldn’t bring her beloved cats to the nursing home.

The woman asked her family members if they would take the cats in, but no one was able to. And so, the poor woman was forced to give her cats to the Anne Arundel County Animal Care & Control (AACAC) in Virginia.

The woman left a heartbreaking note with the cats. The note talked about all the foods the cats liked and disliked. It also talked about the special treats Missy and Zipper got.

This note proves that these two cats were very well-loved.

“At night they get to eat Cool-Whip off your fingers,” the cats’ owner wrote. “Zipper gets five fingerfuls, Missy gets four fingerfuls if they want.

The staff at AACAC were touched by the woman’s devotion to Missy and Zipper, and they were determined to keep the cats together.

They put the cats in a large kennel and gave them plenty of love and affection. Outgoing Zipper adjusted quickly to the shelter, but shy Missy was a bit anxious and nervous.

AACAC shared a post about the cats on their Facebook page, and it quickly went viral. It was viewed hundreds of thousands of times.

“The shelter is reaching out to its rescue partners and to groups that specialize in Birmans, but we’ll be honest: A pair of 16-year-old cats who must stay together is a hard sell, even if, as senior cats, they are available for free from the shelter. Their best chance for a happy forever? An adopter with an enormous heart, a quiet home, a sunny windowsill — and maybe even a comforting tub of Cool Whip,” AACAC wrote.

A woman in Oregon saw the post after it went viral. She immediately forwarded it to her parents, who lived just five minutes from the shelter.

The woman’s parents had recently lost their senior cat, and they were looking for a new cat. The couple fit the shelter’s requirements perfectly.

The AACAC was looking for local adopters since they didn’t want Missy and Zipper to have to deal with the trauma of long-distance travel. The couple also didn’t have any other pets or kids at home.

The couple went over to the shelter and met Missy and Zipper.

Outgoing Zipper immediately started licking their faces. After a few minutes, Missy also warmed up to the couple. Just like that, the two cats had a new forever home!

This wasn’t the only good news—after Missy and Zipper’s story went viral, tons of people came to visit the AACAC shelter.

Many of the shelter’s elderly cats ended up getting adopted, including two 14-year-old brothers named Ralphie and Alphie.
